The Northwest Nazarene women’s golf team did something it hadn’t done in four years Saturday.
The Nighthawks won the second tournament team title in program history at the SMU Invite at Olympia Country & Golf Club. It was the first win for the Nighthawks since they won the NNU Intercollegiate on March 31, 2015.
To make the day even better, sophomore Taylor Entenman became the second Nighthawks women’s golfer to win a tournament. Samantha Miller was the first at that NNU Intercollegiate.
Entenman shot a 6-over-par 78 on Saturday during the second round to finish at 161 for the tournament, edging Saint Martin’s golfer Kathryn Crimp by two strokes for the title.
Hannah Holloway finished third at 164, Ragan McGilvery was fifth at 168, Trinity McCarthy sixth at 170 and Jadyn Sutton tied for 16th with teammate Sienna Quinlivan at 183. Natalie Chehimi tied for 23rd at 194.
BRONCOS FALL IN FINAL WARMUP: Montana State University Billings hit three home runs and the Yellowjackets beat Boise State 26-8 in exhibition baseball, Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
The game was the final in the fall season for the Broncos, who defeated Northwest Nazarene 11-9, Friday. Boise State will play its 2020 home opener, Feb. 28 against Northern Colorado.
Freshman Cole Posey hit his third home run of the weekend and finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Redshirt seniors Michael Hicks and Cory Meyer and junior Christian Padilla each contributed three hits.
On the mound, freshman Jay Baggs started and gave up one run on one hit in two innings. Redshirt sophomore Gavin Gorrell was the most effective reliever logging three-shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts.
STEELHEADS WIN FINAL PRESEASON GAME: Zack Andrusiak had a goal and assist for Idaho as the Steelheads beat the Utah Grizzlies 5-1 their final game of the preseason Saturday at CenturyLink Arena.
Will Merchant had a first period goal, and Joe Basaraba had a goal early in the second period to put Idaho ahead 2-1. Spencer Nass and Andrusiak both scored in Idaho’s three-goal second period and A.J. White scored the Steelheads’ final goal in the third.
Tomas Sholl made 25 saves on 26 shots to earn the win.
Idaho opens the regular season on Friday with a game at Utah. The first regular season home game for Idaho is Oct. 18 against the Wichita Thunder.
Earlier in the day the Steelheads announced forward Conner Bleackley had been loaned to the AHL’s Texas Stars, the Steelheads’ first AHL call-up of the season. Bleackley, who signed with the Steelheads in the offseason, scored two goals in the Stars’ 5-3 loss to the Manitoba Moose on Saturday.
C OF I TIES WITH CARROLL: Alexa Rierson scored a goal and Kylee Atkins made four saves in goal, as the College of Idaho (3-3-3 overall, 2-2-1 CCC) women’s soccer team tied Carroll College 1-1 in Cascade Conference women’s play at Simplot Stadium.
NNU SLIPS BY SIMON FRASER: Jade Zimmer scored the lone goal of the day on a corner kick by Magda Wronski in the 56th minute, as the NNU women’s soccer team picked up 1-0 win over Simon Fraser in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
Alexis Montoya made five saves for the Nighthawks (5-4-1 overall, 2-1-1 GNAC) in the win.
COLLEGE OF IDAHO BLANKS CARROLL: Jack O’Leary had a goal and an assist, while Ben Bechor scored the other as the College of Idaho men’s soccer team shutout Carroll College 2-0 in Cascade Conference play.
Parker Billings made three saves on the day to complete the clean sheet for the Coyotes (4-4 overall, 2-3 CC) in the win.
BOISE STATE VOLLEYBALL EARNS 11TH WIN: Janell Walley’s double-double on 12 kills and 15 digs led Boise State to a 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 24-26, 25-22) Mountain West Conference victory over San Jose State Saturday afternoon in Bronco Gym.
Jessica Donahue added seven kills and a team-high seven blocks.
Offensively, three other Broncos (11-4 overall, 3-1 Mountain West) played big roles in the win as well. Lauren Ohlinger tallied 11 kills, eight digs and five block assists; Shae Duffy contributed 10 kills, two service aces, seven digs and two block assists; while Alyssa Wissinger added six kills and six block assists.
YOTES DOWN WARNER PACIFIC: Kaydre Thompson had a career hit 19 kills and hit at a .500 percentage, leading the College of Idaho to a 4-set 20-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-20 win over Warner Pacific inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
Three other Coyotes (12-5, 7-3 CCC) recorded double-digit kills in Ashley Pagan (17), Jordyn Boswell (12) and Austyn Mauzy (11) while setter Abigail Guinn logged 57 assists in the victory.
NIGHTHAWKS SWEPT BY ALASKA ANCHORAGE: The Northwest Nazarene volleyball team was swept by Alaska Anchorage 25-7, 25-20, 25-18 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.
Natalie Sullivan’s eight kills led the Nighthawks, while Brooke Foster added six. Megan Nelson finished with 17 assists, while Kayla Sale had 9 digs, Caroline McMahon had eight digs and Abbey Blum had seven.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN 11, CAPITAL 1: Nadia Kincaid recorded the hat trick with three goals to go with an assist, while Ainsley Terada added two goals as the Grizzlies routed the Eagles in 5A Southern Idaho Conference play.
