The city of Rexburg supports all Idaho National Guard activities, and specifically is writing in support of Gowen Field and the long-term manned flight mission that this field supports. We believe that the economic impact that Gowen Field provides to the Boise area impacts not only the Treasure Valley but all of Idaho and is vital to our state’s economy. We urge the Department of Defense keep the field open and to select Gowen Field as part of the F-35 mission.
Although Rexburg is located in Eastern Idaho, we are mindful of the advantages and opportunities that locating the F-35 mission in Idaho provides to businesses within the state and to the general economy. As the only state west of the Mississippi to be considered as viable for the F-35 mission, locating this mission at Gowen Field will help Idaho stay competitive in future Department of Defense projects. Additionally, if Gowen Field is selected for the F-35 mission, it will boost Idaho’s economy by bringing civilian jobs and opportunities to local contractors and to our state’s aerospace industry.
Rexburg has a shared interest with the rest of the state to help maintain a healthy State Air National Guard, which provides opportunities for our young people to serve their country. In addition, the more than $291 million the field brings to our state economy has an impact statewide.
Again, Rexburg strongly joins in supporting the city of Boise, the Boise Metro Area Chamber of Commerce, Gowen Field, the state of Idaho, the Idaho Air National Guard and all others who have voiced their support to keep Gowen Field open.
