Forums for the candidates running for city offices in Nampa and Caldwell are set.
Mark these in your calendar:
n Tuesday, Oct. 17: 6:30-8:30 p.m., Nampa City Hall, council chambers, 411 S. 3rd St., Nampa. Candidates for Nampa mayor for the first hour, City Council candidates for the final hour.
n Thursday, Oct. 26: 6:30-8:30 p.m., Caldwell Police Department, community room, 110 S. 5th Ave., Caldwell. Caldwell mayoral candidates for the first hour, then candidates for City Council for the final hour.
These forums are hosted by the Idaho Press-Tribune, our media partners at KBOI-TV and the Nampa and Caldwell chambers of commerce.
I will be moderating the forums, which will include opening statements, a series of questions from a panel and closing statements. Candidates will be given two minutes each to make opening statements. Then, questions will come from two reporters. On a rotating basis, a candidate will be given one-and-a-half minutes to answer a question, and opponents will be given one minute for a rebuttal. Candidates will then be given one minute each to make closing statements.
The goal of these forums is not to surprise anyone or play “gotcha.” The goal of these forums is to allow the candidates an opportunity to express their views and to give the voters a better idea of what the candidates are like. Ideally, the questions we ask at these forums also paint a picture of the differences between candidates. (Does one candidate want to cut taxes, while another one wants to increase services? Does one candidate want to disband urban renewal, while another wants to expand?)
What questions do want answered? What issues are important to you? What are the positions that would make you vote for one candidate over another? Send them to me via email, email@example.com, and I’ll do my best to get them in the mix.
I encourage you to come to the forums. They really are kind of fun, and I think there’s no replacement for seeing a candidate in person. If you’re not able to make it in person, we’ll be streaming the forums live via our Facebook page, so go ahead and watch from the comfort of your home.
To the candidates: Invitations to the forum were all sent last week and the week before via mail, using the mailing address you put on your campaign filing report. Please make sure you check that mailbox and RSVP to me that you’re attending the forum.
In addition, all candidates should have by now received invitations to fill out our candidate survey, which involves a few simple questions about yourself and some of the issues. We’ll be publishing those answers in a Voters Guide on Oct. 29, so stay tuned for that.
In the meantime, send me your questions and keep checking the Idaho Press-Tribune for more stories about the candidates and elections.
