A Meridian police officer was injured and a suspect killed Sunday in a shootout during a traffic stop in a Boise neighborhood.

The officer, Kyle Mikowski, underwent surgery for two gunshot wounds to his calf and returned home Monday to recover, according to the Meridian Police Department.

Mikowski returned fire, killing 33-year-old Daniel Isaiah Norris of Meridian, the Ada County coroner announced Monday.

This was the second officer-involved fatal shooting for the Meridian Police Department in nine days. The other took place June 23, when a man pulled out a non-firing replica revolver and was shot by officers responding to a 911 call.

Sunday’s shootout happened at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday when Mikowski made a traffic stop in the 1900 block of Cressida Place to arrest a man on a warrant, according to Meridian Police Chief Jeff Lavey. Norris was wanted on a parole violation warrant and had a criminal history including kidnapping and robbery, according to the Idaho Department of Correction website.

Mikowski pulled over Norris, who was in a black Dodge Durango with another man and a woman, in a cul-de-sac in the area of Maple Grove and Overland roads, according to police. Police say Norris got out of the Durango and shot Mikowski, who returned fire.

The other two suspects fled, prompting a large search involving multiple agencies. Lavey said Sunday the suspects were considered armed and dangerous. The male suspect turned himself in Sunday on an unrelated warrant; police have not released his name. Police are still looking for the third, whom Lavey described as a Hispanic woman. Police do not believe there is a danger to the public at this time.

Mikowski has worked for the Meridian Police Department for over a year. Before that he worked for other law enforcement agencies for over eight years, a press release said.

He was taken to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, Lavey said, and is in good condition following surgery Sunday afternoon, according to the press release.

Lavey confirmed the Ada County Critical Incident Task Force is investigating the shooting.
