It’s just amazing how many awards and prizes are flowing through this area. We can hardly keep up with the announcements and news releases, which is great for our local students.
I can still vividly remember the mail that announced I was getting a four-year scholarship to the New York State College for Teachers. Of course, that was back when the Earth was still cooling and student loans (that last a lifetime) had not been invented.
Woman’s Century Club awards two scholarships
Two outstanding high school seniors were honored at a recent meeting of the Nampa Woman’s Century Club. The group meets at the Fleet House at 1012 11th Ave. N.
Janet Montoya from Columbia High School and Caden F. Jantz from Skyview High were selected to receive the club’s $1,000 awards. They spoke to club members, thanking them for the scholarships, and then were treated to a “Congratulations” cake and refreshments.
Janet, the daughter of Paul and Janelle Montoya, is planning to attend Northwest Nazarene University, where she will study accounting. She is in the top 3 percent of her class and has taken several advanced placement and college-level courses. She has a notable record of community service, including a mission trip to Mexico, where she assisted in building three houses, visited children in an orphanage and spent time distributing food to families in “tent city” situations.
In the summer of 2015, Janet sorted and packed medical supplies for Nampa’s Hands of Hope. She also shoveled snow from driveways and sidewalks for two elderly neighbors. She assisted in setting up an overnight camp on an Indian reservation, where she was a counselor, and then helped with the clean up and take down process.
Janet is a member of the National Honor Society, won the Top Achievement Award for the first semester at Columbia High in 2017, and won the AP Scholar Award that year.
Caden, the son of David and Yvette Jantz, will major in criminal justice at Lewis and Clark State College. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree, he plans to go directly into the Peace Officer Standards and Trainings (P.O.S.T.) for its 16-week program. He then hopes to apply for the position of patrol officer in Garden City. His dream is to one day become a chief of police.
Caden has been a volunteer at varied places during his high school years, including the West Valley Humane Society, the Canyon County Paramedics and the emergency department at Saint Al’s Medical Center.
The Woman’s Century Club has donated to many charitable organizations and causes since its founding in 1900. After helping with the formation of a public library, it has continued library donations, financial aid to the Salvation Army, help for local theatrical and musical events, and writing, art and photography contests for school children. The club recesses during the summer and will resume meetings at 1 p.m. on Sept. 10. For more information about the club, email Vice President Pamela Krajnik at email@example.com.
