BOISE — A geothermal break on Idaho Street at the intersection of First Street Friday snarled traffic in downtown Boise.
The break caused lane closures on Idaho Street, the Ada County Highway District announced around 1:30 p.m. Friday, expecting delays to continue through the evening rush hour.
Downtown Boise experienced three geothermal pipe leaks late last year and one in April. The geothermal system, the largest of its kind nationwide, heats nearly 6 million square feet of businesses, residences and city buildings in the downtown core.
This summer, the city of Boise is putting in $750,000 of extra maintenance into the system, with a goal of reducing breaks in the winter, when the system kicks into high gear.
