MERIDIAN — The grand opening for Gold Nugget CBD — Idaho’s first standalone CBD store — was anything but quiet Saturday. Within the store’s first five hours, staff had already made 73 sales, exceeding a busy day at their Ontario locations, said Jennifer Long, one of the store’s owners.

The store opened its Meridian location — 1330 E. Fairview Ave., near North Locust Grove Road — just days after closing its Boise Towne Square kiosk. The kiosk was open for about a week and a half before staff decided it was time for a change. Its limited space made it hard for staff to keep products stocked and the location wasn’t ideal for customers who wanted to talk with staff in a more private setting, Long said.

The store sells products made with CBD oil — a substance extracted from cannabis plants such as marijuana and hemp. The oil has medical benefits, and customers have used it to treat inflammation for arthritis, as well as symptoms of anxiety. In other states, some CBD products contain small amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. Any substance containing any amount of the chemical is illegal in Idaho, so all of Golden Nugget’s Idaho merchandise is THC-free, Long said.

On Saturday afternoon, store owner Alan Archuleta spent several minutes walking Meridian resident Jake Anderson through some products that could help with his seizures. Anderson said the medicine he takes has side effects, like nausea, and was looking for something to help manage those symptoms.

Anderson has tried CBD oil products he bought off the internet, but he was glad he could talk with staff and get answers to his questions instead of solely relying on online resources.

Long said a huge part of store staff’s jobs is teaching customers like Anderson about the CBD.

“There are a lot of question about it and the research is still pouring in everyday,” she said.

Before Anderson walked in, Long finished hanging posters on the store’s walls explaining some of the health benefits of CBD. She said she also plans to install a TV on the back wall that will play education videos.

While the store offers a variety of products like lotions, face masks and candies, Long said the oils are the most popular.

In the future, Long said Gold Nugget CBD plans to open another location in Boise and maybe Nampa. Those plans aren’t solidified yet, she said.
