Ada County Elections won't hold elections for school board trustees or library board trustees in May because the candidates in these races face no challengers.
The window to file as a candidate closed March 17, and the last day to register as a write-in candidate was April 3, according to the elections office.
The only elections in Ada County on May 16 will be for the Greater Boise Auditorium District and the Boise Warm Springs Water District.
West Ada School District trustees Ed Klopfenstein and Steve Smylie both filed to run. They were appointed to the school board last year to fill seats left open when two board members were recalled.
Klopfenstein serves in zone 1, a seat previously held by Tina Dean. Klopfenstein, appointed in June, ran against Dean for the school board seat in 2013. He owns a web development company called Visual String in Meridian.
Smylie serves in zone 3, a seat previously held by Carol Sayles. Smylie, a former Idaho legislator and son of a late Idaho governor, was also appointed in June. He is an adjunct professor of education at Boise State University.
Two Meridian Library District trustees filed for reelection: Doug Rutan for a two-year term, and Christina Hirsch for a six-year term.
Rutan retired from 43 years as a public school educator in Arizona and Idaho, according to the Meridian Library District's website. He spent 20 years in the West Ada School District as the principal of Frontier and Summerwind Elementary schools and as the special services director.
Hirsch, the library board's treasurer, moved to Meridian from Seattle with her young family in 2014. She has a background in advertising and media strategy and is now focusing her career on real estate, according to the district website.
