The measure required a simple majority to pass.

Previously, businesses could only sell beer and wine by the drink with a license. The change means that two state-issued licenses will be available for businesses within the city that want to sell liquor by the drink.

A petition was started by an employee at Buck’s Saloon and Steakhouse to get the proposition on the ballot. Russel Gant, the owner of Buck’s, told the Press-Tribune in September that he hopes a change to law will bring in more business from weekend travelers. He also said the change would help his restaurant stay afloat and help others in town.

Licenses to sell liquor by the drink are distributed through Idaho State Police. Licenses are limited to one for every 1,500 people in population in a city, and not more than two for cities with a population of 1,500 or fewer, according to Idaho code.

Idaho code has a local option for municipalities that allows the decision to sell liquor by the drink to be put before voters.
