LaVergne lone Huskie headed to State cross country

Sophomore Riley Buck leads teammate Robbie Gonzales and a pursuing pack through the second mile point of the 5,000 meter District III cross country race at Eagle Island State Park last Thursday.

Four years of running cross country for Emmett High has come full circle for senior Gemma LaVergne. This Saturday she will be the lone Huskie harrier challenging the Portneuf Wellness Center course in Pocatello at the 4A State Championships. It’s the site of her first entry into the State ranks as a freshman.

LaVergne earned the spot with a sixth-place finish last Thursday in the District III Championships at Eagle Island State Park. It was her fourth straight top-six finish in the event, having won it as a freshman and sophomore.

Two Emmett runners came up just a few places away from joining LaVergne in Pocatello. The top 21 individuals in each the boys and girls events get the pass to Poky.

Junior Graci Willis finished 23rd to just miss making her second State appearance. Senior Faye Welling was 38th.

Sophomore Riley Buck was the top boys finisher with a placing at 25. Senior Robbie Gonzales came in 33 just 19 seconds behind Buck. Senior Joel LaVergne was 15 seconds further back in 37th.
