Even if you designate yourself as an organ donor on your driver’s license, almost certainly your organs will not be recoverable unless you die in a hospital. Tissue is included in a donor designation. However, there is no tissue registry as there is with organs—suitable organs are few compar…

I'm writing this letter to share my concern for our pool in the city park.

We as a community have been demanding change in our school district for years. We now have the chance to see change with a new school board. All the board members have been there less than three years, half of them less than one year. Most of the community’s complaints with school district d…

Since election day on Nov. 6, individuals across the state have been deeply engaged in the process toward the peaceful transfer of power. It is a hallmark of government in our United States.

What is wrong with Gem County schools? Are our teachers the best? Not likely, but they are dedicated and capable, although institutionally misdirected. Why are our students only modestly successful? You might already know.

When Christmas nears each year, it irritates me that Christians have succumbed to the neutering of their holiday. It is especially irksome since probably 80 percent of Americans are Christians, in one form or another.

There is a mountain just east of Emmett. Usually this looks like one mountain, but during certain conditions it is clearly two mountains running parallel east and west. I live on South Slope Road, near the end of Johns Avenue. From my big window, I have a full-length view of this mountain. S…

We wanted to thank the school board for taking a fiscally responsible stance and turning down the Emergency Levy that Superintendent Rush proposed. Between the surplus from last year and the state's additional student support funding, there was no reason to ask for more money. The proposed l…

Other than our excellent Gem County law officers and firefighters, we rarely recognize another department that saves us from harm, Mosquito Abatement. This department does much more than keep us from needing to scratch our occasional, annoying mosquito bites. It actually works to keep us fro…

Mr. Wade Carter, Principal of Emmett High School, would like to send a huge thank you to Valor Health for all their time and hard work in putting together the sports physical and concussion testing that took place back in August. Emmett High School and Valor Health were able to complete over…

The good news is that none of Gem County’s schools made the State Department of Education’s (SDE) recent 29 lowest-performing public schools’ list. The bad news is that this list is essentially worthless.

Two of the lead articles in the August 8th Messenger Index nicely summed up the problems with the ham-fisted actions of the Trump administration ("Tariff war trickles down to Gem County" and "Heat wave controls life in the West").

I just spent 3 days at the Hospital here via of the ER and found the experience a good one (as far as a stay in any hospital can be). I want to thank the doctors and staff of the Valor Health Hospital.

Recently I wrote this newspaper about the wonderful railroad nostalgia in Emmett (sedentary monster locomotives, idled scenic passenger cars, the depot) available trackside at Blaser Park; fine for looking backward, but no value looking forward, of course. Even viewed in its best light, an A…

Emmett Head Start would like to thank Trevor Coltrin and Gregory, Julia, and Todd Pulley for all their hard work redoing our parking lot. Trevor Coltrin was able to donate 73 yards of gravel.

As chairman of the Gem County Republican Central Committee I try to be neutral on candidates running in the primary election. But when one candidate attacks other candidates in the same party with television ads that may not reflect the truth, or he twists the truth to meet his needs, I have…

My family was awoken by a stranger in the middle of the night knocking at the door to tell us we had a fire in our back yard. I just want to tell him thank you for being at the right place at the right time, thank you for taking time out of your night to wake us up and help get the fire unde…

Even as spectacularly unimpressed as I am that the (formerly named) Walter Knox Memorial Hospital board of directors paid $3,500 to a marketing “consultant” for nothing more than an ineffective, meaningless name change (Valor Health―VH) and perhaps the equally unimpressive logo that communic…

To the no voters:  You’ve just elected yourselves representatives to help design the next bond! The problems that prompted the school bond still exist, and Gem County needs your help to solve them. Obviously, your vote matters and is needed to provide safe, quality educational facilities. Do…

It must be evident now to Gem County school board trustees that something was very wrong with the latest bond proposal. Only three of 13 precincts voted yes on the March 13 proposal. Absentee ballots tallied in favor. Fifty-nine percent  March 13 voted no. Why?

My response is the same as yesterday and will be the same tomorrow ... get involved wherever you can! The Shadow Butte PTO is always happy to see new faces at our meetings! We don’t build new schools, but we try to boost morale for teachers, staff, students and parents! We help with school e…

I found nothing but good intentions from diverse pockets of the community on the NO side. I felt support from all over for a better bond. To me a better bond is one that focuses on a conservatively planned new middle school, school safety and Sweet and Ola which were neglected in the now fai…

Recent news coverage of Idaho Power’s efforts to relicense its dams in Hells Canyon has not accurately portrayed the company’s position on allowing salmon and steelhead in the Snake River above Hells Canyon Dam.
