Executive Director Christina Walker and Community Outreach Manager Merrin Packer talked about the non-profit Guardian program.

Two representatives from the 3rd District Guardian and Litem Program shared information and statistics about the program at the most recent Emmett City Council meeting. Executive Director Christina Walker and Community Outreach Manager Merrin Packer talked about the non-profit and the work they do in the District 3 area counties Adams, Canyon, Gem, Owyhee, Payette and Washington.

It was stated District 3 represents one of the highest percentages of foster children in Idaho. They said were over 700 children in care in the district lat year. Gem County currently has 30-35 cases according to City Attorney Jake Sweeten.

The Guardian Advocates are appointed by the court to represent the best interests of children who have been placed in Protective Care in Idaho’s 3rd Judicial District. The advocates visit the children in care, assess their needs and represent them in court by making recommendations on behalf of the children.

Volunteer Guardians are encouraged to volunteer for the life of the case, usually 12-15 months, to give the children stability. With so many children in care, there is a great need for volunteers to help as advocates.
