Huskies grab sixth conference win, 51-49, with Schiller looper at gun

This story was first published in the Feb. 6, 1958 edition of the Messenger Index.

A last-second long shot by Ron Schiller, Friday, Jan. 31 headed off another overtime game for Emmett’s Huskie cagers and pulled their sixth conference victory out of the fire, 41-39, in a raid staged by the Pirates from Payette.

Coach Mead’s boys took the floor cold following setbacks at Ontario and Parma the previous week and went pointless through a big part of the first quarter. They trailed 11-3, at the beginning of the second quarter.

But the Pirates turned cold in the second heat while the Huskies, sparked by LeRoy Schadt and Schiller, closed the gap to a single point, 15-14, at halftime.

The lead alternated during the second half, with the Huskies out in front by a single point at the threequarters mark and two seconds before the final gun it was a knotted ball game, 49-49, as Schiller cut loose the winning shot.

Schadt scores high

Schadt’s five buckets and two gift tosses gave him scoring honors for the Huskies and Payette’s Hill looped in seven two-pointers and a trio of free throws for 17 points.
