Why are you running for this office?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
I am running to provide the people of District 9 a choice in their elections, provide a voice for the marginalized, and create progressive policies that will benefit rural Idahoans rather than hinder them.

Republican

What are your top three priorities if elected?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
I will be working on agricultural bills that benefit young farmers, developing the Pre-K education model, and creating clear solutions to the Idaho youth suicide problem.

Why should voters select you over your opponent(s)?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
The voters of District 9 have had great difficulty contacting my opponent. They have also expressed deep displeasure over the controversial trespassing bill that was introduced by her during the most recent legislative session

Should Idaho create a state fund to support the construction of new K-12 schools?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
Idaho should work to create this state fund, as well as build a budget model that clearly separates the education budget from other annual expenses, so as to limit the perception that education somehow detracts from other state projects.

Should Idaho reduce the threshold for voter approval of local bonds from a two-thirds majority?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
It should not. The people of a community should be in strong agreement regarding bond issues. The greater issue is that our schools are not properly funded.

Is Idaho sufficiently funding its higher-ed institutions?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
It is currently not.

Does Idaho have an obligation to provide any funding for pre-K education?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
If Idaho provides pre-K funding, we will see a clear ease of burden on working poor families. I am 100% behind pre-K funding.

Should Idaho create a state fund to support public transportation?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
It should. There is limited access and mobility within the state for those without motor vehicles. An investment in rail is a clear opportunity for both commercial and public transportation interest.

Should state law be changed to allow Idaho cities and counties to institute a local option sales tax in order to pay for public safety projects, such as courtroom improvements or jail construction?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
I am opposed to sales tax as a solution, since it often hits the poor disproportionately, but believe that local governments should be able to implement local solutions, as long as those solutions are legal within state law.

Do you support a repeal of Idaho?s state grocery tax?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
Yes, it will benefit the working poor and we can find equivalent sales tax revenue (of which I am not inclined) if needed from luxury product taxation.

Would you respect the will of the voters should Idahoans elect to expand Medicaid?

I am a strong supporter of Medicaid expansion and believe that it is a necessary action for the people of Idaho.

Would you respect the will of the voters should Idahoans elect to bring historical horse race betting back to Idaho?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
I would. I am somewhat disappointed that there has been no technological alternative to the machines that called this issue into question the last time around. It will be challenged and cost the state in legal fees, but ultimately the voters will be the ones to decide.

Should Idaho remove the exemption protecting practitioners of faith healing from prosecution following the death of a child?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
It should. I am a lifelong Christian and believe in the miraculous works of God, however God calls upon us all to exercise wisdom. As a community, we cannot stand by when a child is being lethally neglected.

Does Idaho need to change its cannabis laws, be it through decriminalization or legalization for medical or recreational use?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
I am a firm believer in decriminalization and legalization. Not only have we seen it is a clear source of revenue for surrounding states, but there is also a clear link to combatting the opioid epidemic. With any newly legalized product, the state legislature will need to guide its introduction and create common sense laws, looking at the states surrounding us, to ensure its success.

Would you support legislation prohibiting gun ownership for two years for persons convicted of domestic violence?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
With any firearm legislation, despite any personal convictions, I have to refer back to the legality it would have within the framework of the Idaho constitution. Most of the proposed legislation that I have seen does not and it is not within the interest of my constituents to waste time on legislation that will be struck down as unconstitutional. The clear underlying need is legislation that protects victims and curbs violence.

The Idaho Board of Correction is requesting $500 million for a prison expansion. Do you support this expansion, why or why not?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
I do not support this large scale prison expansion. I would rather see this money used to focus on mental health services for the formerly incarcerated, job programs, and a focus on services for their successful reintroduction into society. Our prisons should not be a revolving door.

Idaho?s justice reinvestment committee is exploring changes to drug sentencing law in Idaho as a tool for reducing the state?s prison population. What do you think should be done in the area of drug sentencing laws?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
I believe non-violent drug use, that does not threaten the health and safety of children, is an issue that needs to be explored through rehabilitation and counseling rather than the criminal justice system.

Does Idaho need to raise the minimum wage above $7.25 an hour?
Chase Van Weerdhuizen
Democratic
It does, especially at a reasonable rate for Idaho businesses. The people of Idaho working 40 hour weeks should be able to enjoy a decent quality of life.
