NAMPA — Mortgage closing costs are down 7 percent over the past year, and Idaho has some of the lowest closing costs in the U.S., according to a new study from Bankrate.com.
Bankrate surveyed up to 10 lenders in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., in June and found that the average closing cost in the U.S. is $1,847 on a $200,000 loan with a 20 percent down payment. In Idaho, the average is $1,682, according to the study, which is the second lowest. Ohio’s average closing costs were the cheapest and Hawaii’s were the highest.
“Homebuyers have more say over closing costs than they think,” said Holden Lewis, Bankrate.com’s senior mortgage analyst. “Costs vary between lenders, so everyone should compare at least three different options. You don’t have to go with the lender your agent suggests.”
