This unique landscape feature certainly lives up to its namesake. Located near the town of Marsing, the butte sits next to Highway 55 and overlooks the Snake River to the west. The Butte is roughly 350 feet high and has an elevation of 2,634 feet above sea-level. This is fruit country so much of the cultivated land on the hill behind the butte is orchards. The butte, which resembles a lizard basking in the summer sun, is the home to the Lizard Butte Sunrise Service, which began April 17, 1938. The Lizard Butte Sunrise Association pooled its resources more than six decades ago to erect a large cross that remains on the property today.
