NAMPA — Homedale cowboy Bryan Martinat didn't have a true chance to chase the Idaho Cowboys Association title in saddle bronc riding.
Instead, his summer was filled with winning the college national championship in June followed by riding in a few PRCA rodeos.
He still found time for the ICA, though, winning enough to make the ICA Finals at the Idaho Center Horse Park, entering the weekend in third.
And though Jared McFarlane won the season saddle bronc title, Martinat also ended up a winner as his two-head total of 153 gave him the Finals average title.
"It's nice to know I can come in here and win a little money," Martinat said after a 74 Saturday put him fifth in the second round.
Along with money, Martinat also won a buckle for the average, a nice addition to his trophy collection, though he's not sure how many buckles he's won in his rodeo career.
"I think most of my family has stolen a lot," he said, "I gave a lot away. Dang near every member in the family's got a buckle, I think. I still got a few for myself, the one's I like the most. ... It's the memories that count the most."
Plenty of others made fond memories at the ICA Finals, including Melba cowgirl Kayla Tiegs.
Out of the season title running in breakaway roping, in part due to a trip to the college finals rodeo, also, Tiegs set her sights on the average title.
She had to overcome a long wait to win it, as her calf was released early and she was given a "re-rope." She had to wait for two other events to conclude before getting her chance.
"I was pretty, pretty nervous before, that kinda messed up my whole groove and everything," Tiegs said.
Still, she roped her calf in 2.5 seconds, good for second in the round and giving her the average win with a two-head time of 5.8.
"My whole goal was to win the average, win the buckle," she said. "I wanted that forever."
