CALDWELL — Sometimes, the emotion on Senior Day causes a team to lose focus.
That was no such problem for the College of Idaho women's soccer team on Saturday.
The Coyotes honored seniors Mandy Greif, Sadie Hughes, Lauren Winterholler and Jessica Moon with a 3-0 win over Eastern Oregon at Simplot Stadium.
It was the Yotes' team-record ninth shutout of the year.
And the excitement of the day didn't overwhelm the Coyotes.
College of Idaho's Jessica Ayala and Erika Mouritsen jumped right out and tested Mountaineers goalie Allison Seymour with shots on goal. Seymour made both saves.
Ayala missed another chance in the 10th minute, then Chelsea Heffner had a shot blocked by a defender, keeping the game scoreless.
That didn't last long as the relentless Yotes finally jumped in front with Taylor Culver scoring off a free kick from 25 yards out 16:08 into the game.
Culver looped the ball over Eastern Oregon's defenders, towards the goal, where Seymour punched at it but couldn't stop the shot.
"I've been practicing it all week and I saw the far post and I just went for it," Culver said.
College of Idaho (11-2, 6-1 Cascade) didn't let up, either. Greif and Heffner combined to set up Ayala, who placed the ball just inside the left post, for a goal in the 20th minute. That gave the Coyotes a 2-0 lead.
"It's really important in these conference games, when there's so much emotion from both teams, to be first to put the ball in the back of the net," C of I coach Niki Taylor said.
Comfortably in front, the Yotes also needed to keep the Mountaineers from scoring. They did that, as defender Jessica Patton stopped a chance on the goal line, and goalie Kelly Hardegree-Ullman added another big save to preserve their lead at the break.
"We've been talking about it for weeks now, that we just have to lock everything down defensively and not give any other team any open looks, and when we have given up looks, our goaltenders have come up big," Taylor said. "Our defenders have just been solid, they do a good job."
Then came the halftime ceremony honoring the Yotes four seniors.
The emotion of the ceremony didn't affect the team.
Greif tested Seymour with a quick shot and Mouritsen tucked in the rebound 19 seconds into the final session, icing the win.
"I think it's obviously beneficial if we come out and put it away early, it kinda deflates the other team," Greif said.
Culver had an easy final 45 minutes after taking over for Hardegree-Ullman in goal. Culver made one save and Hardegree-Ullman had three saves in the first half.
