BOISE — The Los Angeles D-Fenders might want to rethink their team name.
There wasn't much defensive about the D-Fenders on Friday, as the Idaho Stampede had their way offensively in a 112-107 win in front of crowd of 3,274 inside Qwest Arena. The victory avenges a 106-103 overtime loss Idaho suffered to Los Angeles last Tuesday.
"It is nice when you are able to out-rebound a team by 13," Stampede head coach Bryan Gates said. "I thought we shared the ball really well (Friday) and we had some real positive things."
Helped by 53-percent shooting from the field and a 26-13 advantage in rebounds, Idaho led by as many as 23 points in the first half. The Stampede were up 58-44 at halftime, before Los Angeles made the first of two runs at the Idaho lead.
A Joe Crawford 3-pointer pulled the D-Fenders within six midway through the third quarter. But shortly after Crawford's bucket, the Stampede started to heat up from 3-point range.
In the final 17 minutes, Idaho hit six of its nine 3-pointers in the game.
"They kind of threw a junk press on us," said Luke Jackson, who hit two 3's en route to 23 points. "If they are going to do that we have to swing the ball to the open guy and make shots. It's that simple."
The hot shooting from outside did not exactly get Idaho into the clear, however.
After a Jamaal Tatum 3-pointer gave Idaho a 108-90 lead with 4 minutes remaining in the game, the D-Fenders (6-19) went on a 17-4 run.
Los Angeles managed to make it a two possession game late, but Roberto Bergersen made 3 of 4 free throws to secure the win and give Idaho (19-8) a 2.5 game lead in the D-League's West Division.
Dominance in the paint
The Stampede took a 29-17 lead in the first quarter thanks in large part to their inside play. Idaho out-rebounded Los Angeles 17-7 in the first quarter and as a result, scored 18 points in the paint in the quarter.
"They tried to play small with us, and I felt like Lance (Allred) took advantage of that," Jackson said. "We felt like if they were going to play small we were going to take advantage of our height, and that's what we did."
Allred, a 6-foot-11 center, scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Dwayne Jones, a 6-11 center who started with Allred, added nine points and a game-high 13 boards.
Crawford led all scorers with 29 points.
Burleson makes debut
The newest addition to the Stampede roster made his debut in the Friday's game. Guard Kevin Burleson played in the fourth quarter after being acquired Thursday by Idaho in a trade with the Iowa Energy for Demetris Nichols. Burleson missed his only shot and had a turnover in 2:23 of playing time.
Nichols, meanwhile, had not play a game for the Stampede.
Up Next
The two teams meet for the third time in five days tonight at Qwest Arena. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Following that, Idaho will play road games against the Erie BayHawks (Feb. 4), the Tulsa 66ers (Feb. 7) and the Iowa Energy (Feb. 8). The Stampede won't play again at Qwest Arena until Feb. 19 when they face Iowa.
