NAMPA — When Devin Asselin thinks about Nampa Chrstian's game against Parma earlier this year, the Trojan quarterback can't help but to think of mistakes that allowed the Panthers to run away.
Overthrown passes, dropped catches and other mistakes on offense compounded, one on top of the other. Before long Parma was running away with a 40-6 victory.
Asselin and the Trojans (5-3) hope they can cut down on their mistakes today, when they get another shot at the Panthers (8-0) in the 2A quarterfinals. The game starts at 1 p.m. at Parma High.
"We've talked about how many opportunities we could have taken advantage of last game," said Asselin, who was 13-of-32 passing for 141 yards with one interception the last time the two teams met. "Plays that we should have made, that we didn't make. We thought it should have been a much closer game."
Nampa Christian coach Randy Haverfield said it was a tough week leading up to the Oct. 9 contest against Parma, the defending 2A state champions. As many as 15 players missing practices that week due to illness.
Playing one of the best defenses in Idaho's Class 2A didn't help the Trojans cause, either. The Panthers have shut down just about everyone they've played this year, allowing just four points per game. Parma defensive starters have not allowed a rushing touchdown all season.
"They are solid," Haverfield said. "They have a pretty sound defense to try to execute against. They have some weaknesses. They're not ones that are major, but they're things we can try to take advantage of."
Having already played the Panthers once gives the Trojans a better idea of what kind of things they have to do to stay competitive.
"I think if we can perform better and take advantage of the opportunities we're given, we should perform better," Asselin said. "But they're a good team."
