BOISE — The Blackfoot Broncos' defense found the chink in the Bishop Kelly Knights' armor.
The Broncos held the Knights usually potent running game in check, picking up a 27-14 victory in the first round of the 4A State football playoffs.
Blackfoot improves to 9-1 and advances to the 4A state semifinals against Twin Falls on Nov. 13.
Bishop Kelly finished the season with an 8-2 record.
"We did a real good job with shutting down Bishop Kelly's run game and that was the key in the victory (Friday night)," Blackfoot coach Stan Buck said. "We forced (Bishop Kelly) to rely on their passing game, which made them one dimensional and gave us the advantage."
The Blackfoot defense held Bishop Kelly to just 52 yards rushing on 21 carries and forced two fumbles and two interceptions in the win. One of those interceptions was ran back for a touchdown by defensive lineman Nate Walker as time expired in the fourth quarter.
"It was a great game and we fought hard all the way to the end," Walker said. "Our defense really stepped it up and it was just amazing."
With their running game shut down, the Knights had to turn to quarterback Jake Wylie and their passing game. Despite the loss, Wylie met the challenge as he finished with 213 passing yards and a touchdown.
"Give credit to Blackfoot, they took us out of our game plan," Wylie said. "It was a tough loss, but we battled the whole way."
Meanwhile, the Broncos rushing attack took off, as they accumulated 151 yards on the ground. Leading their ground game was Chris Percy who carried the ball 11 times for 64 yards and three touchdowns.
It was a bitter end for Bishop Kelly, which was undefeated during the 4A Southern Idaho Conference season.
"The kids played hard all year long and it is a sad ending for our seniors," Bishop Kelly coach Lee Leslie said. "I have had a lot of fun with these kids and I am so glad that I came here. The season may be over, but it was nice to get to go undefeated in conference play."
