RATHDRUM — The Parma volleyball team lost their opening match of the day to Nampa Christian, but bounced back to beat the Trojans twice and picked up their second straight 2A state championship.
"They really peaked at district and in state," said Parma coach Kamille Crawford. "They worked hard, they believed in themselves. We were on fire."
After falling to the Trojans 20-25, 27-25, 18-25, 25-17, 15-12 in the first match, the Panthers beat Soda Springs in straight sets to set up the rematch. They beat the Trojans 16-25, 25-22, 27-25, 25-19, then won 25-22,25-20 in a best-of-three match.
Kali Roche had 98 kills over the four matches, Alysha Rohrbacher had 146 assists and Alli Nielsen had 64 digs. The wins gave Crawford, a first-year coach for Parma, her first state title.
"I'm still in shock," she said. "It's kind of a numbing feeling. It's exciting for the girls, it's all about them. I'm really proud of them."
Kayla VanderStelt led the Trojans with 77 kills and 93 digs over three matches, and Jessica Bartlow had 108 assists and 10 kills.
Cross Country
BK's Nist wins second state title
WORLEY — Bishop Kelly sophomore Emily Nist won her second straight 4A cross country title on Saturday, finishing the race in 18:20.85, more than 30 seconds faster than her next closest competitor.
Bishop Kelly was helped by top-10 finishes from Lara Tuthill (fourth) and Rebecca Lassere (sixth) to claim the 4A state crown with 36 points.
Skyview finished in eighth place as a team, led with a 30th-place finish from senior Madison Watson. Rebecca Seideman finished in 20th to lead ninth-place Kuna, while Nampa's Jessica Chandler finished in 35th, competing without her team.
On the boys side, Kuna's Michael Gordon (eighth) as well as Bishop Kelly runners Daniel Williams (fifth) and Travis Milburn (sixth) earned top-10 finishes. The Knights took a third place team finish while Kuna was in seventh. Skyview finished in ninth, led by Tony Agenbroad in 24th.
In 5A, the Vallivue girls team finished in fifth, while the boys were in sixth. John Robinson led the boys team with a seventh-place finish and Morgan Choate was in 12th. The Falcon girls had two runners just outside the top 10 with Alyssa Faulks in 11th and Cheryn Trapp in 12th.
District-III teams cleaned up in the 5A girls team standings with Boise, Mountain View, Meridian, Eagle, Vallivue and Rocky Mountain finishing first through sixth respectively.
In 2A, the New Plymouth girls finished in second, led by Natalie Evans' state championship. Nampa Christian, Melba and Parma were ninth, 10th and 12th, respectively.
Greenleaf was seventh in 2A boys, Melba was eighth, New Plymouth 10th, Liberty Charter 12th and Nampa Christian finished in 13th.

Swimming
Liberty Charter third at Districts
BOISE — Led by two first-place finishes from Lexy VanCampen, and another one Hannah Wile in the 100-meter backstroke, the Liberty Charter girls swimming team placed third at the Idaho State High School district swim meet on Saturday.
The Patriots picked up 83 points, four points behind second-place Centennial.
Vallivue was seventh, while Skyview finished in a tie with Capital for eighth. Columbia rounded out the girls top 10.
Skyview's boys team also finished in 12th place, picking up 12 points. Both Boise teams finished first.
