Skyview beat Century 5-0 and the Kavemen topped Wood River 2-1 in opening round games on Thursday.

Skyview's boys team lost to Sandpoint in double overtime, 5-4.

Century beat Middleton's boys team, 1-0.

The last time the Skyview and Kuna girls teams played each other was in the District III semifinal, with the Hawks blanking the Kavemen 5-0.

"You always don't like to go to state and play someone from your own conference, but it happens," said Kuna coach Dena Walker. "The good thing about it is it's state, and anything can happen at state."

Skyview will attempt to play in its third straight title game.

The Hawks lost to Bishop Kelly in the last two state championship games.

They won't have to worry about facing Bishop Kelly this year, as the Knights lost to Sandpoint 3-2 in overtime.

Kuna 2, Wood River 1

A split-second decision on a free kick lifted Kuna in its first-round game.

Midway through the second half, Tori Aksamit blasted a shot into the net from 40 yards out to break a 1-1 tie.

Aksamit said she wasn't planning on taking the shot until she saw an opportunity right before kicking the ball.

"I wasn't expecting it," the junior said. "I was going to pass it, but I decided to take (the shot). Obviously, it was a good shot."

The score proved to be the winning goal for the Kavemen (16-4-2), who won three straight win-or-go-home games to get into the tournament.

"These girls have shown a lot of heart, and I think heart can go a long ways in the tournament," Walker said.

Skyview 3, Century 1

Goals by Peyton Moon and Lindsey Washburn gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead early in the second half, but Skyview coach Lawrence Nitu stressed to his team that the lead wasn't completely safe.

Sure enough, the Diamondbacks cut Skyview's lead to 2-1 on Hannah Fort's goal.

The Hawks (16-3-1) were able to shut down Century's attack the rest of the way.

"We really know how to collect ourselves and move on," Nitu said. "Nobody had their heads down, momentum was still on our side."

Jenny Field provided Skyview with an insurance goal in the 71st minute on a penalty kick after taking a hard fall by the Diamondbacks' goal. She was a little slow getting up, but Nitu still had confidence in his leading scorer.

"The girls were pushing me to get someone else," Nitu said. "I said, 'no she needs to recover.' She earned the PK, so she was the right person to take it."

Boys soccer

Sandpoint 5, Skyview 4 (2OT)

Sandpoint's Tanner Williams scored in the second overtime period, ending a back-and-forth game.

There were six goals scored in the second half, and there were missed opportunities by both teams late in regulation and in the overtime periods.

"The guys never gave up," Skyview coach Dave Hagen said. "We were down 1-0, 2-1. It was a roller coaster. It's just a tough way to lose."

Jason Vasquez scored three goals in the second half for Skyview (17-2).

His last goal came with 10 minutes remaining to put the Hawks up 4-3.

Sandpoint's Jansen Rinck tied the game off of a corner kick with less than 5 minutes remaining.

Skyview goes to the consolation bracket where it will play Wood River today at 11 a.m.

"That's never the bracket you plan on playing," said Hagen, who called Thursday's game one of the most exciting he's ever been a part of. "They're all competitors, they all want to win. I have no question we'll show up (today) ready to play."

Century 1, Middleton 0

Middleton's story book run for a state title is over.

The Vikings (4-11-4) made the state tournament despite having just two wins in the regular season.

Middleton had its chances throughout the game, putting pressure on the Century net.

Nicholas Rodriguez scored the game's lone goal on a penalty kick midway through the second half.
