CALDWELL — Layne Coffin will need to look at some film — it was that kind of night.
No, not a bad night, as Coffin's Falcons looked so good the fourth-year coach had a hard time finding fault with Vallivue's 49-7 rout of Skyview on Friday night.
"I'm really proud of the kids, they're just good kids and they work hard," Coffin said. "You always preach if you work hard then you can execute, I think we did probably a pretty good job. I haven't seen it on film but I think we did OK."
"Feels good," added Vallivue quarterback JJ Hyde. "Wasn't as a sloppy as most first games are, so we're glad with what we did."
Hyde led a nearly unstoppable offense that turned the ball over just once on downs and then again at the halftime horn, rolling up a 30-0 lead at the break.
Then on defense, the Falcons dominated with four interceptions, two fumble recovers and a trio of sacks.
"I'm very pleased with the defensive intensity and the athleticism they showed," Coffin said.
As for the Hawks, who trailed 6-0 early and tried to answer, marching to the Falcon 40, a Brandon Montoya interception seemed to send them spiraling downward.
"We are definitely young and I think that showed," Skyview coach David Young said. "Part of inexperience in a football game is when things go your way you can roll, and when they don't sometimes you panic or you just play outside of yourself.
"Vallivue was just controlling the game right in the beginning, they were letting us beat ourselves and we were doing that."
Of course, the Falcons helped as a 7-yard JJ Hyde touchdown run, followed by an 8-yard Yadon Hruza TD romp made it 14-0 at the end of the first.
Hyde also tossed scoring strikes to Trevor Bartlett and Devan Telken for the 30-0 halftime lead.
All-around effort
While the Falcons turn to Hyde to lead the way at QB, they may not have expected the senior to do it in every facet of the game like he did Friday.
Hyde completed 15-of-27 passes for 253 yards and three TDs, playing under center just over half the game, while also rumbling for a team-best 72 yards on six carries.
He helped out defensively with an interception, and he forced a fumble, and added to his efforts by doing the punting.
"Wasn't bad," he said of his night, "hopefully I can have more days like that."
"He's one of those kids that, he's just an unselfish kid and he plays good team ball," Coffin said.
Something to build on
Despite the lopsided loss, Skyview found a rhythm in the fourth quarter behind the quarterbacking tandem of senior Sam Cook and junior Hunter Hyde.
Cook marched the Hawks 46 yards, and nearly to a score, but saw the drive thwarted by a Montoya pick.
Undaunted, Skyview rallied with a 70-yard scoring driving capped by a Hyde to Tanner Robison screen pass that went 40 yards for the Hawks' lone score.
"It's good to complete some passes just to kind of say, 'Hey, it wasn't all terrible,'" Young said.
Young added of Robison, a sophomore who caught five passes for 77 yards filling in at running back: "It's nice to see some of the young guys make some plays."
Up next
Vallivue (1-0) plays at Rocky Mountain while Skyview (0-1) hosts Timberline next Friday, with both games at 7 p.m.
