GOP dominates in Idaho

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008
Idaho is a predominantly Republican state, with 2.25 people voting for George W. Bush for every one person who voted for John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election, a ratio that is the third highest in the country behind neighbors Utah and Wyoming.

Democrats have had some success in some areas of Idaho, notably four Boise legislative districts, parts of Pocatello and the Wood River Valley, but most of the state remains firmly within the grip of the GOP.

The last time the majority of Idahoans voted for a Democratic presidential candidate was when Lyndon Johnson barely beat Barry Goldwater to Idaho’s four electoral votes in 1964. The last time the Republican Party’s electoral dominance of Idaho’s delegation to the United States Senate broke was in 1974, when Frank Church was elected. The last Idaho Democrat won a spot in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992 but was ousted in 1994.

Idaho’s governors have been Republican since 1995, though before then Democrats had held that position since 1971. Idaho’s State Senate and House of Representatives are both overwhelmingly Republican, although several Democrats won positions in the House of Representatives in the 2006 elections. For more details on Idaho’s legislature, check the sections for state senators and representatives.

Federal Government

Idaho, like every other state, has two senators. Both are elected by statewide votes and serve 6-year terms.

Larry Craig

The state’s senior Republican senator was born near Midvale and has served in the U.S. Senate since 1991. Despite his arrest in an airport sex sting, he has said he will serve out his term through the end of 2008.

Sen. Craig welcomes visitors to any of his offices. A complete list can be found at craig.senate.gov/offices.cfm
