Short week, tough trip for Broncos

BOISE — Boise State head coach Chris Petersen wouldn't say his team is used to abnormal schedules, but the Broncos don't really mind.

No. 5 Boise State (8-0, 3-0) will go for its 12th straight Western Athletic Conference win Friday in Ruston, La., against Louisiana Tech on ESPN2.

Losing a day of preparation and taking a long flight just come with the territory, according to Petersen.

"I don't know if we're totally used to it, but our guys have known the schedule for a long time and they're back at it," Petersen said Monday. "It's not the ideal situation, but I don't know if there is for anyone anymore in college football."

Bronco coaches typically spend most of Sunday analyzing the previous day's tape and start to move on to the next game that evening. Players tend to have Monday off, when they can study Saturday's game and the next opponent on their own. Instead, they were out Monday practicing.

"All that's kind of packed together, we put the last game to rest faster than we normally would — we're in earlier in the morning on Sunday," Petersen said.

The Broncos had a short week Sept. 18 when they played at Fresno State — a game they won 51-34. Again, there is a day of preparation lost before playing at a difficult venue.

Louisiana Tech (3-5, 2-3) is 3-0 at home this season, winning by a combined 120-26. Boise State is 3-1 in Ruston as a WAC team, but has not led at the half in any of those games.

"It seems like every time we go back there, it's not decided until the fourth quarter," Petersen said.

Boise State is no stranger to long road trips, having played in Hawaii, Oklahoma and Ohio thus far. Senior cornerback Kyle Wilson doesn't think it's the isolated environment of Joe Aillet Stadium in Ruston, but simply the team on its field.

"They just have good teams," he said. "I don't think it's a certain place, just good teams."

Petersen not concerned with Oregon

After Oregon routed USC 47-20 on Saturday, the Ducks moved up from No. 10 in the Associated Press poll to No. 7. Eight AP voters put the Ducks ahead of the Broncos, despite the fact Boise State beat Oregon on Sept. 3.

With the Ducks on a roll and facing one more ranked team (Arizona) the rest of the way, there are some thinking the Ducks may surpass the Broncos in the BCS rankings.

"I'm not going to go that direction until the season's over, because I think a lot of things will shake out," Petersen said. "To get frustrated right now when we've got five games left ... is kind of missing the point."

Wilson picks up WAC honor

Boise State senior cornerback Kyle Wilson was named the WAC defensive player of the week Monday.

Wilson had a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown and five tackles in the Broncos' win over San Jose State. It is the second straight week a Bronco earned defensive player of the week honors — Jeron Johnson picked up the award after the Hawaii win. Fresno State running back Ryan Mathews (185 yards, two TDs against Utah State) was the offensive player of the week and Idaho kick returner Justin Veltung (94-yard kickoff return for a TD against Louisiana Tech) was the special teams player of the week.
