Boise State shows some brotherly love

BOISE — The Boise State home crowd witnessed Saturday the first of what likely will be many Moore brother touchdowns.

With 9 minutes and 32 seconds to play in the first quarter, sophomore quarterback Kellen Moore hit freshman receiver Kirby Moore, his brother, for a 61-yard touchdown to put Boise State up 7-0.

The score was the first of Kirby Moore's career and the first he's caught from his brother since 2006, when Kellen was a senior at Prosser (Wash.) High.

"It's kind of a dream come true, you can say," Kirby Moore said.

The younger Moore owns the national record for most touchdown receptions with 97, but had not scored in the six games he had played with the Broncos. In fact, he only had two catches for 16 yards coming into Saturday's game, with just one from his brother.

With four catches and a team-high 80 yards, the 45-7 win over San Jose State was a confidence booster.

"This game is going to help with confidence, making strides in everything, from blocking to catching," Kirby Moore said. "I'll feel more like I know what I'm doing and be able to play faster."

Kirby Moore caught 14 touchdowns his sophomore season at Prosser when Kellen was the quarterback, and the two connected on plenty more in their younger years, so six games was a long drought.

"It probably should've come soon, at least at some point," Kellen Moore joked. "We'll be here three years (together), so probably one would come."

The touchdown meant a lot to everyone in the blue and orange, not just those with Moore on the backs of their jerseys.

"I think everyone on our sideline had a smile on their face," Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. "To get a chance to play Division I football with your brother ... when you can hook up for touchdowns, I think that's really, really awesome. I think that's why Kirby came here, for those situations."

Wilson gets pick No. 1

After a 2008 season when he had five interceptions, senior cornerback Kyle Wilson came into Saturday's game without a single one.

"(Center) Thomas Byrd told him he had just as many picks," Kellen Moore said.

Wilson finally got his first interception of 2009 in the third quarter, and he made it worth it, running it back 27 yards for a touchdown. He said he had a dream that he would score soon and told his roommates, safeties George Iloka and Jeron Johnson.

"It's an unreal feeling, my first interception for a touchdown," Wilson said. "... I just had a feeling there was going to be a point in a game coming up where I was going to be tested and I was going to be ready."

Martin still recovering

Sophomore running back Doug Martin led the team with six carries for 63 yards, all coming in the fourth quarter. He capped the scoring with a 36-yard touchdown with 20 seconds to play.

Martin saw one snap last week at Hawaii and was kept on the sidelines Saturday because of a leg injury. Petersen said he hopes Martin can be back to normal by Friday's game at Louisiana Tech.

"I still could see in that run that he's not 100 percent, I could see him dragging his leg a little bit," he said.
