CANYON COUNTY - Mosquito trapping results from the Fourth of July weekend has resulted in nine positive West Nile virus tests, according to the Canyon County Mosquito Abatement District.

Traps located near Highway 95 and the Boise River, Roswell Marsh and Roswell Cemetery tested positive, as well as two sites on Ballard Lane in Middleton and Channel Road east of Caldwell.

The string of hot weather has resulted in an increase in the population of Culex, the species of mosquito that is one of the primary vectors of West Nile Virus.

CCMAD has already responded to the elevated Culex numbers by treating all the mentioned areas with follow-up applications scheduled through the end of this week.

Canyon County Mosquito Abatement District will continue mosquito abatement activity with aerial applications of the mosquito larvae control compounds containing Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) on the designated location areas.
