BOISE — State Sen. Melinda Smyser, who represents District 11 in Parma, will not seek re-election this year, she announced Monday.

Recent redistricting would force Smyser to run against her friend and colleague Patti Anne Lodge, and that's a race she doesn't want to participate in, she said.

“When I became a state senator representing Canyon and Gem counties, Senator Patti Anne Lodge was there to welcome and support me,” Smyser said in a prepared statement. “Because of my friendship with — and respect for — Senator Patti Anne Lodge, I will not run for re-election to the new District 11 Senate seat.”

Smyser called her time in the state legislature “a great honor,” and said she plans to stay active in the political process and the issues she cares about.

“I have some regret in leaving the Idaho State Senate, because there are several issues that I have not completed the work on,” she stated. “I have every intention to stay involved and I will announce my future plans soon.”
