CANYON COUNTY — A jury found Gregory Raymond Higgins Jr., a Nampa man charged with first-degree murder, guilty Friday.

Higgins is accused of shooting James Groat, a 27-year-old Nampa man, near Lake Lowell in August. Groat was shot five times but no murder weapon was ever recovered.

Higgins’ trial took place over the course of one week before jury deliberations began.

Prosecutors argued that witness testimony, corroborated by physical evidence, proved Higgins must have been the trigger man who shot Groat five times.

Higgins’ attorney, however, argued he never left his home that night, and that only his accomplices’ testimony — some of which were perhaps unreliable — placed Higgins at the scene of the crime.

Two men also charged in the shooting — Christopher Michael “Mikey” Duran and Cruz Flores — both testified against Higgins during the court proceedings.
