Election staff readies for turnout

CANYON COUNTY — Although election day turnout can be hard to predict, Canyon County Clerk Bill Hurst said officials are ready for an influx of voters Tuesday.
Off-year municipal elections tend to have lower turnout than those with statewide and presidential candidates, but several high-profile issues have arisen in this round.
Local residents will vote on several key races, including Caldwell and Nampa mayoral positions, a host of city council seats and a hotly debated jail bond.
Because of the jail bond, even Canyon County residents who live outside city limits will be able to cast ballots. It's possible interest in the $46 million measure could draw more voters to the polls than would otherwise go.
"We're prepared for a 60 to 70 percent turnout," Hurst said. "Whether that'll happen, I don't know."
Absentee voting has been light, Hurst said, with just a handful of people per day at the election office in Caldwell.
Voters with questions about where they need to go to vote can call the Elections Office at 454-7562.
