Caldwell native Sam Tucker breaks 1,000 combat hours

Maj. Sam Tucker, right, a weapon systems officer assigned to the 335th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, broke the 1,000-combat-hour milestone and is congratulated by his fellow Airmen. Surpassing more than 1,000 combat hours is a rare record in the F-15E community. Tucker grew up in Caldwell.

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan — Growing up in Caldwell, Sam Tucker listened to the stories of his grandfather, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Carroll Tucker, and his exploits as a B-17 Flying Fortress navigator in World War II.

As a result, young Sam Tucker knew exactly what he wanted to do when he grew up.

Maj. Sam Tucker is still living out his dream as a flyer in the backseat of an F-15E Strike Eagle in Afghanistan with the 335th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron.

Recently, the Instructor Weapon Systems Officer, deployed from the 334th Fighter Squadron, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., broke a milestone that few in his chosen career have reached — he surpassed 1,000 combat hours.

Breaking 1,000 combat hours is a huge feat, according to Lt. Col. Eric Trychon, 455th Expeditionary Operations Group deputy commander.

Lt. Col. Christopher Anthony, 335th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron commander, added: "Most guys are just hoping to get to fly 1,000 hours in the jet, let alone 1,000 hours in combat."

"I didn't think this would ever happen," said Tucker, a 12-year Air Force veteran. "It was always like a bridge too far for me, for everyone really."

Capt. Taylor Francis, a 4-year Air Force veteran weapon systems officer, said comparatively speaking, Tucker's accomplishment is like playing football as long as Brett Farve or playing baseball as long as Cal Ripkin Jr.

"It's day-in and day-out getting the job done and done well," Francis said.

Tucker prides himself in getting the job done. He not only has 1,000 hours in combat, but more than 2,300 hours in the Strike Eagle. Never one to shy away from his job or duty, he has deployed five times.

His first deployment was to the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing, Southwest Asia, then twice to the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing, Southwest Asia, and twice more to Bagram, Afghanistan, where he is currently serving out an extended deployment.

Tucker has flown in support of Operations Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

Deploying so often has been made a bit easier for the major because of support from his wife and children.

"I'm six for 13 on anniversaries and have more pictures of my children's birthday parties than I've actually been to," Tucker said. "Luckily my family understands the mission and what it takes to get it done. My wife is a one-of-a-kind woman, they just don't make them like her anymore. I love her and my children dearly."

Comments:

Is it possible that Maj. Sam Tucker has ever expressed any opinion as to why the war in Afganistan is going so badly despite his supreme exploits in the air.

Reference the replicant comment at 4:02pm on 21 October 2009. Wouldn't it be nice to just once read a story where the accomplishment is lauded for what it is, where there's no hateful rhetoric towards someone else's posting or postings of other self-indulgent or politically motivated words. For the person who posted this comment, just let it go. Let everybody read the article for what it's meant to convey - Maj Tucker's milestone. I'm pretty sure that was the purpose of author TSgt Jung's article to begin with.

I couldn't agree more. However, I have to wonder where your nobilty was when the late Senator Kennedy's accomplishments were being attacked with statements about "good riddance"? I can only assume that he must not have been "good enough" for you to defend.

Replicant: Are you sure you know what it is you're posting comments to? I'm quite sure there isn't any relevance posting comments about the late Senator Kennedy's accomplishments to an article dedicated to Maj. Sam Tucker's cockpit time.

Are you sure you wish to continue with the self-aggrandizing act of educator and noble defender? The relevance is in your whiny plea for an article about accomplishments not to be "sullied" by comments you don't like. You're a little late to take that high road now, since I'm quite sure I didn't see you playing noble defender then. If I had seen you do it any other time, I might consider you something other than a hypocrite.

Replicant - Sir, you have a problem. You should have stopped with your comment posted at 4:05 pm on 21 October 2009 -

How funny is that? I wonder if the irony escaped your superior intellect that if you truly meant what you said in your first comment, you wouldn't have posted anything at all? Could your real issue be that you simply have nothing worthy of noting in your own pathetic existence?

As a fellow professional pilot who lives in Caldwell, I congratulate Major Tucker on his accomplishment. If he ever wants an airline Job, I would be happy to talk to him.

An impressive accomplishment, and congratulations for not pasting the overused "hero" label on a hard-working professional. Stay safe and keep flying!

Having know his grandfather Carroll Tucker I'm not a bit surprised at this young mans dedication and service to his country. BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is so sweet of you. Especially coming from an individual who chooses to ridicule the surnames of others whom have served this country as well. I'm also impressed by the way that you spit on the American dream and those who sacrifice for it by suggesting anyone who disagrees with you be "deported" and "put out of their misery" "Faster'n you kin say Jack Robinson"

Having gone to school with Sam, it is not a surprise to find him at the top tier of his industry. Congratulations and God Speed for a safe return.
