Trial set for former Nampa football player Kip Ramos

NAMPA - A jury trial for Kipton Ramos - the former Nampa High School football player accused of punching his coach - was set today for April 20 in 3rd District Court. Ramos faces a felony charge of aggravated battery, punishable by up to 15 years in prison if found guilty.

Ramos was an 18-year-old Nampa High School football player when he was arrested Oct. 30, 2008, at the Bulldog Bowl after he allegedly punched his team's head coach, Scott Wooldridge.

Wooldridge received eye and nose injuries. The coach was attempting to restrain Ramos after an altercation between the Nampa senior running back/defensive end and a player from Emmett High School.

Officers detained Ramos - one of a core group of senior players on the team who played on the previous year's state-runner-up team and was also a runner-up in the last two state wrestling meets - shortly after the incident.

Evidence includes audio tapes of Ramos' conversations with police officers the night of his arrest as well as video taken of the punch itself.

Ramos is no longer a student at Nampa High but works out with the wrestling team on school grounds on weeknights. Ramos was ordered, however, not to have contact with his former coach.

Hundreds of spectators were in the stands Oct. 30 to witness the incident, which started directly after an onside kick by Emmett as the game clock wound down. The attack on the coach occurred after the end of the game, officials said. The Bulldogs won the game 28-16.

"The altercation was over a call made by a ref," Nampa Police Sgt. Mick Lathrop told the Idaho Press-Tribune.

A referee from the game submitted an ejection report for Ramos. The report typically bars a player from participating in the remainder of the game where the trouble started and can also ban them from the following game, John Billetz, executive director of the Idaho High School Activities Association, said.

More details on the events leading up to the altercation between Wooldridge and Ramos are detailed in a Nampa Police Department report:

"Scott stated he was called onto the football field by the referee, because Kipton got into a fight with some player on the other team and the referee Bruce Chandler over a call. Scott stated both football teams started to clear the sidelines to fight with each other so he ran out onto the field to help. Scott stated he grabbed Kipton and was trying to calm him down by saying 'Calm down, I need you for the next game.' Scott stated he was pushing Kipton from behind, trying to get him off the field, when Kipton stated 'Stop pushing me,' and then turned around and started to punch at him, hitting him in the nose."
