NAMPA — Work on the Black Cat Road and Robinson Boulevard bridges over Interstate 84 has resumed in a different fashion after an October collapse that injured 14 workers.
Construction began again Friday night to place girders on the south end of the Robinson structure. A nearby field was the site of a chaotic scene Oct. 27 when workers rode a falling section of the bridge about 30 feet to the ground.
Officials said the workers were pouring concrete to build the bridge deck off-site in a nearby field, then place it over the interstate.
The new plan, using footings and piers already constructed to build the bridge in place, will allow construction to continue while the investigation into the incident proceeds.
"By resuming the work now using conventional bridge construction methods, we can finish the project without further delay," Idaho Transportation Department resident engineer Shawna King said. "We've done everything possible to regain time lost to the collapse, and this allows us to focus on the timely completion of the project."
Dismantling of the remaining north span of the Robinson bridge and both spans of the Black Cat structure — located at the Robinson construction yard near I-84 — is expected to begin Monday. The work should last about two weeks.
Completion of the $8.5 million bridge project is expected by early spring.
Robinson Boulevard is closed from Franklin Road to Stamm Lane. Black Cat Road is closed between Franklin Road and Overland Road.
