Legendary Boise Junior College coach Lyle Smith turned 96 today, and he was out at Boise State's fourth practice of the spring.
Midway through practice, Boise State coach Chris Petersen huddled his team together, then had them all converge on the sideline where Smith was watching practice. The team sang "Happy Birthday" and shook hands with the coach and former AD.
I've liked how the team has practiced this spring, with the veterans looking solid and the youngsters keeping up pretty well. All four QBs have shown some pretty nice glimpses and mistakes, at least the variety that I can see, have been minimal. Kirby Moore and Matt Miller have been very good hauling in passes in traffic. Dallas Burroughs is a burner (which we knew), and is definitely progressing.
Defensively, Lee Hightower has made some nice plays, and new DBs coach Jimmy Lake (who I talked to today) seems excited to work with the sophomore-to-be. Redshirt freshman defensive end Sam Ukwuachu has had some nice moments. He's still thin (6-5, 215), but has made some good plays. He dropped back into coverage Friday and picked off a pass, running it back for a TD. He's a guy to keep an eye on in the competition to replace Tyrone Crawford, Shea McClellin and Jarrell Root.
