Boise State is No. 2 in the nation, per the NCAA, in takeaways. The Broncos have created 17, tied with Oregon and UCLA. The only team with more is Fresno State, with 18. The Bulldogs play in Boise on Saturday.
Getting turnovers was a point of emphasis in the offseason, and it’s paid off so far.
“It’s a great feeling, but we’re not No. 1 … that’s the plan, to be No. 1, until we get there, we’re not going to be satisfied,” cornerback Jamar Taylor said.
The Broncos have played one fewer game than Fresno State, Oregon and UCLA, so their 3.4 takeaways per game is No. 1 nationally.
Defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake has been plenty happy with his group, which has created six interceptions and has a fumble recovery.
He said many defensive backs coach tend to focus solely on technique, and while that’s a focus, he said he ends each drill with a ball being thrown at his players.
“There’s ones we’ve left out there, there have been a couple we could’ve picked off and ran back for touchdowns – we’ve dropped a few,” Lake said. “… even the success we’ve had, it can still be a lot better. We’re not settling for what we have.”
