One of my favorite films of 2008 was "Man on Wire," a documentary about Philippe Petit, the French high-wire arist who walked between the World Trade Center towers in 1974, 1,350 feet above ground. Even as I watched them perform, I still had a hard time grasping the fact that I was watching Wilco play in Idaho. At a winery. In the middle of nowhere.
The Chicago-based rock band put on quite a show. Drawing more from their earlier work — especially critical and fan favorite, 2002's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" — than from their most recent disc, "Sky Blue Sky," Wilco played until 11 p.m., with frontman Jeff Tweedy asking fans at one point, "Do you need to go home yet?" The crowd screamed, "Nooooooo!" and on went the show.
After playing a healthy set of 16 songs, the band returned to the stage for an 8-song "longcore." The crowd ate it up, even when Tweedy asked whether all Idahoans were survivalists, as he claimed he'd been led to believe.
