When Opera Idaho announced its 2009-10 season this week, it was clear that there are some big changes coming to the organization.

For one thing, there will be more shows. This past season, there was one performance each of two main operas, along with Opera Under the Stars. That's pretty typical. Next year, however, there will be multiple performances of five operas, as well as a recital to kick off the season.

Here's the schedule:

  • Season-opening recital with Rochelle Bard and Ken Mattice, Sept. 11, 2009
  • Gounod's "Faust," Oct. 30 & Nov. 1, 2009
  • Menotti's "Amahl and the Night Visitors," Dec. 5 & 6, 2009
  • Rossini's "Cinderella," Feb. 26 & 28, 2010
  • Rorem's "Our Town," May 21 & 23, 2010
  • Rodgers and Hammerstein's "South Pacific," July 9 & 11, 2010
Beginning this year with Rorem's "Our Town," the Opera will present an American story by an American composer each season for the next five seasons. The 2011 American opera will be chosen by patrons through a Web vote.

The Egyptian Theatre is Opera Idaho's new home for all performances (except for "South Pacific," which will be held at Idaho Botanical Garden).

Tickets will also be cheaper this year, with the highest single ticket price being lowered from $80 to $69. Senior and children's tickets will be available, as well as a student rush. Season tickets are available now. New subscriptions will be available May 15. Single tickets go on sale Aug. 1. Call 345-3531 for more information.
