I remember what my father always said about the weather:

If you try to predict the weather, "you're either a dumb - - - or a newcomer because the weather changes so much here.

In the 13+ years that I've dealt with the weather page, I've never been happy with the final product. We don't have a professional weather person working on staff. So we have to rely on people who say...read more

Our new business magazine debuted today. It is called Business to Business, and it is designed to share information about local businesses with consumers. But it's also geared to providing opportunities to learn from successful business owners and managers. And there are always new ideas and tips that anyone can use. We've also created a Business To Business blog.

Our first edition highlights two successful businesses: D&B Supply, which marks 50 years of operation this year, and Peppershock Media. We've included a "round-up" of some of the need-to-know information that Canyon County businesses depend on.

With each edition, scheduled every four weeks, we'll also feature a local book that offers best practices or advice to owners and managers. And we'll have a contest so someone can win an autographed copy of the book. To win, you'll have to post a comment on our new blog...read more

There are many schools of thought when it comes to "commenting" policies. I ran across this article and thought it might make for a good discussion here.

Some newspapers and other bloggers allow comments without an approval process and ask the readers to police/report offending content. We don't follow that process. We approve the comments and delete posts that are libelous or...read more

Earlier this year I shared the news that we would focus on breast cancer in 2009. One in seven women get breast cancer. We all probably know a woman - a wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother, friend or neighbor - who has had breast cancer.

There will be a lot of information on Tough Enough For Pink during the Snake River Stampede and Caldwell Night Rodeo. That raises money to help...read more

I appreciate it when readers pose questions to the newspaper. Because if they are asking questions, chances are that other readers want answers, too.

Both of the questions today relate directly to the Opinion page, reserved for opinions on several different levels. Please read the letters below.

First, there's the opinion that comes from the editorial board that includes community members...read more

On Friday, I marked 30 years at the Idaho Press-Tribune.

I remember when I first applied at the Idaho Free Press and the Caldwell News Tribune. I was graduating from Oregon State University on June 3, 1979, and I was marrying a New Plymouth farmer. The potential territory was limited - from Ontario to Boise. An Oregon State connection helped me get an interview with Free Press Editor John Bromley...read more

Today, I mark 30 years at the Idaho Press-Tribune. It's been quite a ride. And God willing, I figure I have about 15 years ahead of me. I hope I'll still be here at the paper.

I'm working on a column of memories for Sunday's paper. Let me know if you have something to add to my most memorable moments in 30 years because many of you played a huge role in the past 30 years.

Here's what I learned at Nampa's TweetUp!

  1. There are a lot of nice tweeple. They all have lives outside of sending 140-word-character messages daily.
  2. Boise Tweeple will drive to Nampa for a good TweetUp!
  3. There are other applications I should be using: tweetdeck and/or twhirl. I failed to ask which one is better. Tweetdeck gives you ability to sort, search and watch different streams of information. Twhirl lets you manage more than one twitter account. I've downloaded both and will give it try.
  4. There are still a lot of people who don't twitter but are interested in learning.
  5. There are many people who still use old-fashioned bookmarks on their browser to monitor favorite sites and blogs.
  6. Not very many people use igoogle pages to monitor their favorite bloggers and Web sites.
  7. How to send photos via my cell to twitter.
  8. I need lessons on how to quickly upload photos to facebook.
  9. TweetUps are fun. I'll go to more.
  10. I need to get out more.
Thanks...read more

Do you twitter or tweet? Then join us at Nampa Downtown's Market Limone for a local "tweetup."

No, Tweety Bird will not be there, but you'll get to meet some of the avid "tweeters" in the Treasure Valley. I'll be there with my computer, so look for me.

If you don't know what twitter is all about, you might want to drop by as well. This gathering gives tweeple...read more

Have you read Laid Off Loser's blog?

He lost his job on April 3, and launched a blog about his experience on April 6. The former Idaho Statesman reporter has already developed a following.

I was one of his first. I had just started a week of furlough, and I was having a pretty big pity party for myself. So it came at a good time.

Nobody likes to skip a paycheck, but I was counting my blessings...read more

KTVB's Doug Petcash did a two-part piece on the future of newspapers. He did a good job relating a very big story in two segments. And it gave a good perspective of what's going on with newspapers.

But it's important to remember that our local newspaper is not one of those big papers going under right now.

For starters, as Idaho Press-Tribune Publisher Rick V. Weaver told Petcash, our...read more

I'm teaching my second semester of basic news writing and reporting at Boise State University for the Communications department.

It's been a great experience. I've learned a lot.

But it's been awkward to be enthusiastic about journalism and newspapers when there's been so much bad news.

I was a bit melancholy when the Rocky Mountain News shut down. But I wasn't personally...read more

I hope you were able to read today's paper this morning at your leisure instead of pacing the floor waiting for your Idaho Press-Tribune.

Admittedly, last Sunday was perhaps the worst I've seen in my last 30 years at the paper.

Instead of a hundred or so complaints on an average Sunday, our numbers went over a thousand.

Since then, we've had some on-time deliveries and a few that...read more
