Baseball season has officially started — at least for the sports staff here at the Press-Tribune.

The official start to the season may still be a few days away — Sunday night to be exact — but for many fantasy baseball fans out there, it started months ago with preparation.

My league held its draft Sunday night, a near four-hour marathon thanks to some technical difficulties. For...read more

All weekend long, everyone I ran into had to hear about my NCAA men's tournament bracket.

Not to be too cocky, but I usually do pretty well with when it comes filling it out each year.

I won our office pool two years ago. Five years ago I took second.

Consistently good is better than being lucky in my book.

So this year, guess who's leading the way? That's right, yours truly.

I...read more

Missouri holds on

The Tigers are going to the Sweet 16, beating the Golden Eagles 83-79.

Missouri up 2

With 5.5 seconds to play, Missouri took a two-point lead, 81-79.

Another good game

What looked like would be a blowout now is a good game as Marquette has got back in the game and only trails Missouri 58-56 with 10:48 to play in the game.

Xavier holds on to advance to Sweet 16

Big lead

This one might be over, Xavier hit a 3-pointer and now leads 49-41 over Wisconsin.

Take that

Xaiver's Jamel McLean just slammed home a dunk in Jon Leuer's face. Leuer is two inches taller than McLean. With less than 6 minutes to go, Xaiver leads 46-41.

Xavier hold slim lead

With 7 minutes to play in the game, Xavier leads Wisconsin...read more

Wanna know one reason why I love it when big-time sporting events come to the Treasure Valley

It gives our area some great publicity. And more so, it tears down many of the stereotypes that drive us nuts.

We hear that Boise and the Treasure Valley is a backward place. The Land of Potatoes. Hillbillies abound.

Even on Thursday I overheard some sportswriters covering a midwest school that shall remain...read more

Wisconsin warming up.

That was fun ...

Too bad I was trying to write my column at the end of the final game, I nearly missed the overtime battle between Wisconsin and Florida State. The Badgers won it at the end with a clutch shot from Trevon Hughes.

Close at the end

With 5 minutes to play in the game, Florida State holds a 5-point lead on Wisconsin.

Portland State a few minutes before tipoff with Xavier.

Another blowout ...

Xaiver holds on to win 77-59 in what, for the most part, was a second-half blowout.

Snoozer x2

Xavier has all but put this one away. With less than 8 minutes to play in the second half, Xavier leads Portland State 68-47.

10-point lead for Xaiver

It was a close game, but with 4:19 to play in the first half, Xavier just took a 10-point lead, 37-27, over Portland State...read more

Cornell has the smartest cheerleaders -- no doubt about it.

Second half snoozer

Missouri is starting to run away with this game. With 11:29 to play, the Tigers own a 56-40 lead on the Big Red from Cornell.

Big Red down early

After the second media timeout, Cornell trails Missouri 13-10 with less than 11 minutes to play in the first half.

Game two is under way

Marquette prior to tipoff

Marquette holds on for win

What a game! Utah State came close, but in the end the Big East team took out the WAC with a 58-57 first round win.

Utah State had as much as a five-point lead late, but Marquette took over when it needed to and made several clutch free throws.

Up next: Cornell vs. Missouri.

Last season, when I went to Birmingham, Ala., to cover Boise State's run in the NCAA Tournament was really a great time, but covering just the tournament, and not a specific team, is even better.

Thursday was pretty busy with all eight teams practicing and doing interviews.

I only made it for the second half of the day since I was working on a column on Portland State which had practice and...read more

I just took in my first practice of the NCAA Tournament, and trust me, I'm ready to see some good games this weekend here in Boise

While Missouri was on the court going over some drills, the first thing I noticed was that the Boise State court - gaudy Bronco logo and all - had been removed. The NCAA now has the same look at all the sights. In 2005, the last time the tournament came to Boise,...read more

Monday, March 16, 2009 - 8:18 pm

Since 2002, the NCAA changed the way it distributed teams to the eight first -and -second round regional locations.

And frankly, the new "pod" system for the NCAA Tournament stinks.

With the tournament back in Boise for the first time since 2005, many will look past this as no big deal, but for me, I want to see the best teams possible.

Last time (2005), this worked out as No. 1 seed...read more

Selection Sunday is less than a week away and there are plenty of teams teetering on the edge of getting in, or playing in the NIT.

Sunday afternoon could be long wait when the selection committee fills in the Field of 65.

Being "On the Bubble" this time of year usually means two things: Your team is good, but it is also had some tough times this season.

Picking teams that should get...read more
