Pregame of the Humanitarian Bowl.

Fourth quarter

Colin Kaepernick added a late TD for Nevada, but it was too late as Maryland ran out the clock to win the 12th Humanitarian Bowl, 42-35.

Scott goes for another

Da' Rel Scott added his second TD to give the Terps a 14-point lead. Scott now has 153 yards in less than a half of play.

With 7:44 to play in the game, Maryland now has a 42-28 lead over Nevada.

What's the difference between a 9-7 season and an 0-16 season in the NFL

Not much.

Those records may seem miles apart, and trust me, as a Detroit Lions fan since the Bill Sims days, they are. But are they really?

Not to the GMs and owners who run the teams.

Monday morning we all knew Lions head coach Rod Marinelli would get axed, heck, even he said, "You can't go 0-16 and expect...read more

So far, the Western Athletic Conference is 0-for-3 in bowl games. Ouch!

I must confess, I was pretty torn on which team to pick in the Poinsettia Bowl ( I went with the Broncos by a slim margin), but for the New Mexico Bowl and the Hawaii Bowl, I was pretty confident Fresno State would beat Colorado State and Hawaii would beat a less-than-spectacular Notre Dame team at home.

What do I know? They...read more

Boise State and TCU battle in the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego.

Fourth quarter

Boise State gets within 1

With 4:47 to go in the game, Boise State added a 32-yard FG by Kyle Brotzman to get within one point, 17-16 of TCU.

TCU takes the lead

Boise State's lead is gone as Joseph Turner scored the Frogs' second TD on the game to take a 17-13 lead.

Boise State had led all game long until the 17-yard run by Turner. With 8:51 to play, TCU holds a...read more

The scoreboard inside Qualcomm Stadium.

Kickoff about 40 minutes away

Just got back up to the press box after going down to the field level and I must say, it is a bit wet. Not too wet, but you can tell the rain Monday will make it a bit slippery in some spots - mostly corners - of the field.

Oh and the clouds are starting to roll in so it may get a bit chilly as the night goes on.

That's about it for now, check back during the...read more

Boise State and TCU will play tonight at the NFL home of the San Diego Chargers.

It's finally here! After a long week of anticipation, Boise State and TCU are set to battle at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego later this afternoon

My take: I think it should be a great game of two of the top-ranked teams in the nation. I root for a solid game from each squad. Let the best team win.

I did, though, pick the Broncos to win by a narrow margin, you can read that here.

It looks...read more

Boise State plays San Diego at the Jenny Craig Pavillion in San Diego.
There wasn't much sunshine today here in San Diego, the day before the Broncos kick off with TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl.

The weather for the team's visit to the USS Midway was miserable, but coach Petersen was OK with it.

"I don't know why anyone is talking about the weather 'cause this is paradise to us where we came from," he said at his morning news conference. "It can stay like...read more

A view from Coronado Beach.
Day 1 for me here in San Diego comes to a close as Dave an I just got back from watching the team take part in racing go-karts. It looked like a good time.

There's not too much else going on today. It appears that the Broncos are pretty focused on the game against TCU on Tuesday night.

I was watching ESPN and they seem to be pumping it a bunch. Can't really blame them.

I did take a few minutes to...read more

I left Boise this morning while it was snowing and now I'm here in San Diego. I ditched the fleece pretty quick after I got off the plane.

Dave Southorn and Greg Kreller have been down here for a few days and we'll all be here through Wednesday.

I'll have more later, but for now, we're off to run down some Boise State players for some interviews.

With all the coaching carousal news during the past few weeks, it may only be a matter of time before some Boise State football coaches move on to greener (monetarily, that is) pastures.

It's no secret that offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin and defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox are hot commodities given the team's success the past three seasons.

It's hard to hide the Broncos' defense, which is...read more

When the 63rd Heisman is handed out, it will go to the most popular player, likely not the “most outstanding player” in college football.

This year, there are only three players who were invited to New York for the award presentation. They are Tim Tebow (Florida), Sam Bradford (Oklahoma) and Colt McCoy (Texas) — all QBs.

In the past, there has been as many as six invited. This year could have had that many, too.

Since 2000, only one nonquarterback — Reggie Bush — has won the award.

Heck, even last year, when Tebow won it, I thought Darren McFadden (1,830 rushing yards), who had Herschel Walker-type numbers, should have been the winner.

It just may be that we are in the QB-era for the award. From 1972-83, every winner was a running back. It goes in cycles, I guess.

Along with the three already invited, here’s who should also be in New York tonight:

Shonn Greene, Iowa. Green rushed for 1,729 yards this year.

Graham Harrell, Texas Tech. Harrell passed for nearly 5,000 yards and led Tech to an 11-1 record.

Andre Smith, Alabama or Michael Oher, Ole Miss. Both play O-line, both will be top 10 draft picks.

My vote would go to McCoy. But I also think he should be playing for a national title, so what do I know?

The Internet age is truly fascinating, I think we could all agree on that.

For better or worse, we live in a time where any, and just about all, information is one click away within our Web browser.

As a journalist, it’s a great tool — only if used wisely, of course.

But last week, during the frantic chaos created by a few bloggers, the Internet proved, once again, not to believe...read more

Boise State is going to San Diego to play TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 23, but in the process, the team got there after not getting a BCS bid, despite being ranked ahead of the Ohio State Buckeyes, which did.

Boise State finished No. 9 in the final BCS rankings, while Ohio State was No. 10. The Buckeyes will take on Texas in the Fiesta Bowl.

Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson...read more

I love this time if year: Coaches who don’t get it done are out the door, while the new ones come rushing in with expectations as high as Kilimanjaro.

Case in point: Gary Andersen, the new head man at Utah State.

Andersen comes to Logan with one failed year of college head coaching experience (Southern Utah), but to his credit, plenty of adequate assistant jobs to get him another chance with a downtrodden program.

Was it a good choice? Who knows. But what we do know is that he has his work cut out for him. After all, Brent Guy, a defensive coordinator like Anderson, only won nine games in four seasons before him.

Right out of the gate, Andersen said “we will win football games” and “Our goal from the very beginning is to take out the cream of the crop in the WAC.”

Take out who, coach?

“Boise State. So here we come,” Andersen proclaimed.

Wow. I love a coach who talks like that. None of this, ‘Win one game at a time’ crap from this guy.

But those are some lofty goals, especially for a team that last had a winning season under the Clinton Administration (1996, if you’re wondering).

I’ll bet the next time Andersen is asked about those statements, and you can bet he will next summer at the WAC media preview, he’ll have a toned-down demeanor.

According to a slew of Internet rumors, that’s what they’re saying. Boise State head coach Chris Petersen is going to be the next head man at Mississippi.

Here’s a link from a local TV station down there.

It's been reported that the deal for Petersen at MSU is four years and $9 million. He makes about $1 million — with bonuses — at Boise State.

That may be what many members of the WAC may be saying for the second-year La.Tech coach.

It looks like Dooley is on the short list for several jobs, including the vacancy at Mississippi State — a job Boise State coach Chris Petersen was talked about for.

Here’s the story from the Monroe (La.) News Star.

It’s becoming more and more evident that Boise State men’s basketball has been forgotten in the Treasure Valley sports scene.

Now I’m not gonna advocate anyone to rush out and buy seasons tickets, but it’s hard to believe that it’s this bad. I’m not sure if it’s apathy, or more simply, basketball has lost its interest in our football-crazed state.

Here’s...read more
