I've been as critical of Lane Kiffin as anyone, and why not, he hasn't coached a football game yet for the Tennessee Volunteers and he's always in the headlines.

As Sporting News radio host Tim Brando said recently, Kiffin is college football's version on Sarah Palin —they'll both say anything to excite their base.

Since he's been on campus in Knoxville, he's put his foot in his mouth so deep that he has been reprimanded by the Southeastern Conference commissioner for his comments about Florida's violation (which was not true) of recruiting rules.

So would it be a surprise when a 13-year-old — who has yet to play high school football — commits to a college and it would happen to be Tennessee?

Last week, the younger brother of Eric Berry, the Vols' current All-American safety, told recruiting service Rivals.com that he would attend Tennessee —in 2013.

While Evan Berry likely doesn't even shave yet, he knows where he's going to play his college ball. When I was 13 I didn't know what I was doing next week.

So is this a problem? Should kids, who have yet to play varsity football, spout off about where they will go to college on scholarship?

Is Kiffin at all responsible and does he have contact with a middle schooler who runs sub-4.5 forty times?

Who knows, however, it's highly ironic that it just so happens that Kiffin is involved in yet another headline-making stunt.

Can't wait for those post-game press conferences, coach.

No Floyd, nobody thinks Lane Kiffin is crazy. Just stupid.

BSU's coach is a scientologist. You think our coach is crazy?
Floyd - 9:09 PM, Friday July 10, 2009
If I were a Vols fan I would be beaming like all the other ones are right now. To know that Lane Kiffin is the coach of Tennessee's 2'nd best football team. Or is it 3'rd? Does Memphis still play football?
James - 5:58 PM, Friday July 10, 2009
Lane Kiffin is like Steve Spurrier with out the talent, experience or intelligence.
Jay - 5:54 PM, Friday July 10, 2009
Logic in Tennessee. 1. Lane Kiffin says multiple stupid things 2. Tennessee gets a lot of press attention 3. Tennessee fans declare that this is a victory for them I guess after you haven't had many victories, even negative press is good.
Josh - 5:48 PM, Friday July 10, 2009
It is interesting that some of these Vols fans say that because you are from Idaho, you don't know college football. In the last 5-6 years BSU has been consistantly ranked, not Tennessee. In fact what have they done in the last 10 years? I think that the AD in Knoxville had taken so much heat for Fulmer, that he went to the opposite end of the continuum and found the anti-Fulmer. Loud and obnoxious! Actually, I have thought of one achievement that Tennessee has done that Boise State has not. LOSE TO WYOMING! And during a season that Wyoming was so bad that they fired their coach.
James - 5:43 PM, Friday July 10, 2009
WOW! Talk about boring! Since you speak of Kiffin and how he hasn't coached a game yet.... my question is have you written an article before? In the second sentence you said, "Kiffin is college football's" thereshould be no apostrophy after football. Fact remains, you have an open invitation to come onto the strip and say this is you want. I feel however you will decline, with the reason of possible personal harm. Just like your teams conference you are W.A.C!
Lane_Kiffin - 5:41 PM, Friday July 10, 2009
I don't really care about the article. I just thought you should know that you were totally wrong about the apostrophe. "Football's" does need an apostrophe. The phrase should say "college football's version. . ." just as Mr. Dailey has written. For the same reason, you should have written "team's conference". By pointing out something you thought was an error, your own multiple mistakes became much more obvious.

And by the way, I'm sure that Coaches Kiffin, Pop Kiffin, Orgeron, Reeves, Thompson, etc. appreciate the exposure you have given Tennessee in you part of the country. They can prove you to be an uniformed hack and will turn it in to a positive with potential recruits in your area. UT has had a couple of good players from Idaho and that region of the country in the past few years. This staff will reel more in. Thanks again.

Thanks for the coverage and being the victim of what you critique! Go Vols

I suppose your plan to draw readers to yoru blog has worked. This laziness that you demonstrate is sickening. Was there no Coach in Idahoe worth talking about? Thanks for the coverage, though. I am certain that any potatoe eaters that happen to have some football talent will be calling Knoxville rather than playing on blue carpet in front of 3 dozen fans.

From a real journalist: Can we leave the 13-year-olds alone? Let’s all make a deal right here. I know some of you like recruiting news as much as you like breathing. I get that. I don’t understand it, but I get it. But can we all agree that we don’t need to be writing and talking about where a 13-year-old kid is going to college? Reports surfaced last week that Evan Berry, the 13-year-old brother of Tennessee superstar Eric Berry, had verbally committed to Tennessee. Why a 13-year-old child would be talking to any reporter is an issue, but for now let’s set that aside. There are a couple of facts that get in the way of this story. One fact is that you can’t commit to someone who has never offered you a scholarship. The other fact is that you can’t offer anyone a scholarship until they are registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse. So if Tennessee has offered the kid a scholarship then the Vols have violated NCAA rules and the kid can’t commit. If Tennessee has not offered the kid a scholarship, then the kid can’t commit. Now he can SAY whatever he wants. He’s 13!!!!!! So why was this a story? I’m not trying to be a smart aleck. I really want to know. http://blogs.ajc.com/barnhart-college-football/2009/07/06/its-good-to-be-back-what-did-i-miss/
Lane - 9:33 AM, Friday July 10, 2009
Phil, Way to rattle the cage of all these UT cool aid drinkers! If BSU had a coach with an 5-15 record and an ex-employer that calls him a "compulsive liar," I would have the smarts to keep quiet. Not these guys. Are they so starved for success that they will grasp at anything? Maybe cheap talk means something down there. But I doubt it. These poor people are desperate. I feel sorry for them. We all should. Other than being raised by a father that was a good defensive coordinator under Tony Dungee, what has Lane Kiffin ever done? Had a short stint at USC (so did Tom Cable), then went on to Oakland. Now Tennessee. Those guys are right about one thing, the SEC is tough. So do they really want a puppy like Lane Kiffen coaching a storied program like UT? What are they going to feel the morning of the Florida game? Terror? I really believe that if Florida has the ability to score 100 points on the Vols, they will. Look at what happened to Georgia last year. And they were pre-season favorites to win the BCS. In short, Tennessee and even all of you coolaid drinkers, deserve someone way better than lane kiffin.
Jay - 2:10 AM, Friday July 10, 2009
Maybe you need to get your facts right. During a camp, a reporter asked this kid who he wanted to play for and he said "Tennessee" and when asked again about being commited, the young man answered that he was "Committed" to Tennessee. You failed to inform your readers that this young man's father played for the Vols and currently, his older brother is playing for the Vols -- so guess what? This kid is a UT fan and wants to play for the Vols. SURPRISE!!!! The stupidity of reporters, like yourself, are keeping the Vols in the headlines every day....Kiffen doesn't have to do anything. It appears to me that the joke is on you! HA!

You are clearly trying to generate attention for you newspaper by jumping on the "hate kiffin" bandwagon. You're very original. Good game. P.S.- You have typos in your article. Nice journalism.

Speaking of foot in the mouth... this article is about as bad as it gets. Don't quit your day job.
Hale - 9:35 PM, Thursday July 9, 2009
I'm giving you a pass since you are from Idaho and likely know little to nothing about college football, and especially about the big time football of the SEC. In the future, you might want to do a little background work before you write something stupid like this so called column. Coach Kiffin hasn't offered a 13 year old. This particular 13 year old just happens to be one of the younger twin brothers of a consensus All American football player at Tennessee whose father also played at Tennessee. The 13 year old was ambushed by a Rivals.com writer at a summer track meet who kept pressing the kid when he found out that he was Eric Berry's younger brother. If you want to dog somebody, dog the Rivals.com writer for pressing a 13 year old instead of Lane Kiffin.
Laughing out loud at you - 9:10 PM, Thursday July 9, 2009
I bet that Dave Hooker thinks that you are a moron! why don't you worry about Boise State and stay out of the SEC! Are you just jealous that you don't have Coach Kiffin or that your Coach's wife isn't hot like Layla? Bring those boys from Boise State on down to the SEC.....Any team in the SEC could beat your boys!
Jeremy - 8:28 PM, Thursday July 9, 2009
Phil, the kid's dad was a Vol fooball team captain. His older brother is a current Vol All-American. So, where's the news in a 13yr old kid saying he wants to be a Vol like Dad and big brother? Hmmm? That's newsworthy? The only story here Bob...is your article. Why write it at all? It's an obvious parroting of some national media Kiffin-fest. ESPN spent billions on SEC football TV rights. So, they're forced to hype the SEC in all it's glory. However, you have no such connection. So, why would you parrot ESPN SEC hype? The truth is that some future Idaho football star just became intrigued with Lane Kiffin because you wrote this piece. Unnecessarily so. You just made Kiffin's and ESPN's day. Bob, that kid should be reading about WAC football. Leave the SEC hype to those who paid for the TV rights. B. Roberts

This article is guilty of many logical fallacies. The syllogism goes something like this: 1) Kiffin is a loudmouth 2) Being a loudmouth is always bad 3) Being a loudmouth gets one in the news 4) Getting in the news, therefore, must be bad 5) Tennessee gets in the news because a 13-year old, when pressed by a reporter, tells the gallavanting reporter he's "committed" to Tennessee 6) This must be related to all the other newsworthy, and bad, things Kiffin has done 7) So Kiffin must be at the bottom of this. 8) And so Kiffin is doubly bad. Points 2-8 are false premises. This is really bad writing because it's really bad logic, not because it supports one team or another. Only 1 is a valid claim. And by the way, a simple search on ESPN.com or any other major news outlet that reported on this story LAST WEEK, demonstrates that it was the sports reporter who made the egregious mistakes and loudmouthing in this instance, and not Kiffin. Dear writer, it's not hard to do research anymore w/ the advent of the internet.

Stick to minor league hockey and high school sports. Since the best football in your state is played on a blue field, I'm not sure what qualifies you to even talk about SEC football. You write about Kiffin's untrue comments about Florida's rule violations only to do the same thing at the end of your article and accuse Kiffin of rules violations. Stick to the small pond. You are way out of your league when you try to comment about the SEC.
Michael - 5:38 PM, Thursday July 9, 2009
---- Actually, the SEC reprimanded more than just Kiffin. And second, he hasn't coached one game, so you can't judge him in that realm yet and you can't get mad at people being positive until he has had a fair amount of time to be judged, but third... he has recruited a top ten recruiting class within months after being hired (doubt many others can say they have done that), fourth, he had nothing to do with Berry's statement and fifth this is a poorly written article as far as structure goes, as well as amount of data vs. opinion. On top of that, what information you are using to support your opinion is inaccurate. Or maybe you don't care and are just the Sarah Palin of bloggers. ;OP I for one will not be returning to this blog.
Jesse Olive - 5:38 PM, Thursday July 9, 2009
Wow. Another Kiffin-bashing article with no basis in truth or reasoning. Do you even bother doing research before spouting off -- or are you just another hack journalist with too much time on his/her hands?

So Kiffin is supposed to be able to control what comes out of an eighth graders mouth now? He isnt even old enough to "commit" anywhere. That this is even a story is laughable. Thanks for the free publicity...I am sure there is nothing else to write about football wise in the state of Idaho anyway.

Weird, when I was 13 I said I was going to play for the Bulls. I obviously don't need to tell you the criticism Phil Jackson received for that one.
Josh - 2:57 PM, Thursday July 9, 2009
Seriously, I for one believe that knocks on Kiffin are completely warranted. But aren't journalists supposed to at least fake doing research before writing an article? The reporter tricked the kid into using the word "committed" in the wrong context. Kiffin didn't do anything wrong in this instance. Go back to attacks on his character, that seems to work better for you.

Let it be known that I'm committing to play football at UT right now! Had Evan Berry said "I really like UT and I'd like to go there," there would have been no story. But the word "commitment," made this an international witch hunt for Kiffin, once again. I love how the media takes any opportunity to jump all over Lane Kiffin, even if he's not even mentioned. Peyton Manning's toddler child could commit to UT tomorrow and the whole world would jump Down Kiffin's throat about it. The "Bottom Line" is that these kids can say whatever they want to, but it takes a pretty desperate reporter to actually publish it.
Wade - 2:30 PM, Thursday July 9, 2009
Does it matter to you that it is now clear that the reporter ran with a story with no facts to back it up? Does it matter to you that Kiffin had nothing to do with recruitment, commitment, or anything else involved with this story. Aparently not. Look, I know things get pretty slow up there waiting on the taters to come in but please, please don't comment on something you obviously know little or nothing about. BTW, I'm refering to big boy college football. Idaho, you gotta be friggin kidding me.
Tom - 2:26 PM, Thursday July 9, 2009
Facts: Dad,James Berry, played running back at UT from 1978 to 1981 and his older brother Eric is currently an all american at UT. Imagine a 13 year old being influenced by his dad an older brother. Remember he sees EB play at Neyland on Saturdays and hears the loud chants of his brothers name echo through a stadium that holds over a 100 thousand fans. At 13 how could he not be influenced by his heroes, family, and observations. I am sorry to say that you are a very ignorant journalist. Laziness shouldn't be tolerated in your field.
r - 2:24 PM, Thursday July 9, 2009
Woodward and Bernstein you're not. 10 minutes online would have answered your question--Evan Berry never committed to Tennessee. One of your hack brethren took something innocent and made a story out of it. James Berry debunked this with in 24 hours. But I guess as long as it's about Lane you'll run with it whether you know of what you speak or not. Sad that hacks like you think you can pass judgment.
AllVol a - 1:55 PM, Thursday July 9, 2009
I agree with Barry, I think you should check your facts before condemning Coach Kiffen for something he has not done. He was not involved in the younger Berry's comments to a reporter. If Kiffen was at Idaho you would think it is great that 13 year old aspire to play for Idaho.
John - 1:51 PM, Thursday July 9, 2009
This isn't ironic. In fact, it's as far from ironic as something can possibly be. Irony means that a result is the OPPOSITE of the expected outcome. Do you really think that it's IRONIC that Lane Kiffin is in the news for more shenanigans? Personally, I don't think that's the opposite of the expected outcome at all- I think that's pretty much the expected outcome. Now, if Joe Paterno suddenly started recruiting middle schoolers and calling Jim Tressel a cheater, that would be ironic, because that's the opposite of our expectations for Joe Paterno.
Kibbles - 1:35 PM, Thursday July 9, 2009
Evan Berry wasn't offered a scholarship. Kiffin isn't even allowed to offer him scholarship per the rules of the NCAA. This is a kid saying he wants to play for the same school his dad (UT captain)and big brother (All-American) play for. You know what they say about opinions...
John - 1:31 PM, Thursday July 9, 2009
Bottom line: Kiffin doesn't read the Idaho-Press Tribune.
Go Vols - 1:19 PM, Thursday July 9, 2009
Kiffin had nothing to do with the commitment of Evan Berry. He has not been offered a scholarship. Does it mean anything if I say that I'm committing to USC? No. I know Idaho is far and away from anything interesting, but do try to educate yourself about things on which you choose to write an article.
Blake - 12:33 PM, Thursday July 9, 2009
Do some research. Evan Berry was at a track meet and a reporter asked him about his brother and UT. He said that he was "commiting" to UT. Keep in mind that this is coming from a 13 year old. Kiffin hasn't offered him anything, nor has he recruited the kid.
