It's been an ever growing trend at the College of Idaho — a long list of acadmeically outstanding athletes earning honors.

So this fall is no different as 34 student-athletes were named to their respective Cascade Conference All-Academic teams.

Just how does that rank against the league's other schools? Next closest were Corban and Concordia, with 23 and 22 respectively, while competing...read more

CALDWELL - The College of Idaho sports information director Mike Safford Jr. was honored Monday with four top-ten finishes in the NAIA-Sports Information Directors of America Publications Contest, announced at the annual NAIA-SIDA convention in Tampa, Fla.

Safford, who will begin his eighth year at The C of I in September, earned the praise of his peers in four Media Guide categories - in Combined Basketball, Volleyball, Softball, and Combined Soccer. It is the eighth-straight year that he has received at least one top-ten finish.

The Coyote Combined Basketball Media Guide finished second overall in the contest, the Volleyball Media Guide was sixth, with the Softball and Soccer books placing seventh out of the nearly 300 NAIA schools across the nation. Each of the publications were printed by The Caxton Printers, Inc. in Caldwell - with the help of Wayne Garrett and Dennis Pattee.

CALDWELL - Well, the postseason will be on the road for the Coyotes, after what started out a very promising spring.

Both The College of Idaho baseball and softball teams had hopes of hosting Regionals, giving them potentially a leg-up on their competition, and an easier path to the World Series in both sports.

And watching them both play down the stretch, it truly seemed like both teams should be hosting.

The Yote men took 13 of their final 18, including beating back the best arms the Thunderbirds had in three of four games.

Meanwhile, a 9-game win streak on the softball field, which included a twin bill sweep of league champ and then No. 20 Oregon Tech, proved why the Yotes were picked as the preseason favorite, there.

Now both teams hit the road, which might be a bit disappointing for Coyote fans.

But there’s plenty of reason to have high hopes for these two teams because they’ve proven just how talented they are of late, and they both seem to be playing their best when it counts most.

So, good luck to both, and maybe the road will be the road to the World Series.

The College of Idaho’s Joey Zubizarreta delivers a pitch against Oregon Tech on March 1. The Coyotes host British Columbia for the season regional crown.

Baseball can win Region title; softball needs win for postseason
CALDWELL — Pick your playoff scenario — there’s plenty for Coyote fans this weekend, and they’re all playing in town.

The College of Idaho baseball team hosts British Columbia in the finale of the regular season with the Region I title still at stake, while the C of I softball team entertains Eastern Oregon on Saturday for a twinbill that will either end the Yotes’ season or send them to the postseason.

“It’s a good position to be in,” C of I baseball coach Shawn Humberger said of playing for the title, which brings with it the right to host the Region I tournament beginning next Thursday. “You go into the year and set goals and obviously making the postseason is the first one, being able to win the conference title and regional title are second ones, and that helps put yourself in position to get to the World Series.”

The first stop on the road to the NAIA World Series will either go through Caldwell, or Vancouver, B.C., depending on what happens on the diamond this weekend.
The Yotes need to sweep the three Region I contests — the teams play two doubleheaders beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday and again at 11 a.m. Sunday — to win the regional crown.

Not so unlikely, as the Yotes (25-23 overall, 15-6 Region) have a few things going for them, including home field.

“I think just from being road weary it’s an advantage,” Humberger said, as his team spent over a month on the road before last weekend’s four-game home sweep of Corban.

Plus, the Yotes are playing well at the right time, having won 10 of their last 14.

“We’re swinging the bats pretty much better than we have all year, and I’d like to say playing pretty good defense,” Humberger added. “... And we have five or six pitchers throwing well, giving us a chance to win.”

Meanwhile, the Thunderbirds (22-23, 16-5) have lost eight of their last 11, including five straight setbacks.

The streak is not much of a concern for the Coyote coach, who is more focused on the T-Birds’ pitching staff.
“I think that probably my biggest concern going into it is the matchup, they got a lot of left-handed pitchers and it’s something we haven’t excelled against this year,” Humberger said.

“We haven’t swung the bat very well against lefties, and their No. 1 starter is a left hander, and pretty much their entire bullpen is left handers. We’ll work a lot on left-handed break balls going into the weekend.”

Six-foot-3 sophomore lefty Mark Hardy (6-4, 4.66 ERA) blanked the Yotes north of the border, while the T-Birds also have five other southpaws.
Still, Humberger is excited about the weekend.

“I think we’re certainly capable of sweeping it,” he said, adding that the team won’t be too upset if they don’t clinch the regional crown, as there’s still bigger things to work on.

“We want to get in the mind frame that we need to keep playing good baseball, we want to get some momentum going into next Thursday. Ideally we’ve like to have that at home.”

As for the softball team (23-16, 12-10), just playing next weekend is the goal, one that is finally within the team’s grasp as they need just one win against the Mountaineers (20-22, 10-12) to advance. The teams play a twinbill starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.

“Two weeks ago we were pressing and looking at the possibility of to not making the postseason, then all of sudden we get hot with two big games against Great Falls,” C of I softball coach Al Mendiola said. “Did that spark our winning streak? That definitely was a doubleheader we definitely played well in. I think it was a start to our performance the next couple games.”

Since, the Yotes have run off eight straight, including a sweep of No. 21-ranked Oregon Tech, which put The C of I within a win of the postseason, and took some pressure off the team needing to sweep the Mounties.

Pitching has been one key in the Coyotes’ recent run, but so has offense, as the team’s most dangerous hitters have found a spark once again.

“We need to pitch like we’ve been pitching, and during the time we’ve played well our offense has started to click,” Mendiola said of this weekend’s doubleheader. “Stacy Smith has started to hit the ball like she can, and Katie Zillner as well.

“That kinda takes pressure of Haley Butcher and Brooke Judy and those players who have been having to carry some of the load.”

Still, the Yotes need that one win, and Mendiola knows that there will be no letup after getting this close.

“Look for some fireworks,” Mendiola said. “These girls, Katie Zillner’s senior night, I don’t think she’s going to end her softball career on Saturday. ... If she has any control of it she’s going to try and extend it at least another week and maybe another two weeks.

“(Senior) Kelsi Murdock, she’s had an opportunity to play all year long and doesn’t want to end her career ... they can see a little light at the end and they realize they can do things if they make it to next weekend.”

The College of Idaho's Kalie Kurdy slides across home to score against Southern Oregon on Friday afternoon at The College of Idaho.

By Mike Stetson
mstetson@idahopress.com

CALDWELL — Can one play redefine an entire season?
That will have to be seen, but Friday in Caldwell, The College of Idaho softball team definitely did it’s best to shake off the previous two months with one swing of the bat.
A meager swing.
Favored to win the Cascade Conference and potentially earn a berth to the NAIA Women’s World Series at season’s start, instead the Coyotes struggled with consistency and just couldn’t seem to get a break.
A team that seemed to play without confidence, came into Friday’s must-win twinbill with Southern Oregon having turned things around slightly, having won four straight.
A modest win streak, and one that would mean little without two wins over the Raiders, who swept The C of I in Ashland, Ore., to start the month.
The Yotes cruised to the first win behind Katie Zillner, who struck out 11. That hasn’t been the problem for The C of I. The problem has been Game 2, and it looked like things might be the same early on.
A missed double play and a fielding error led to a quick 1-0 Southern Oregon lead. A small break against the Yotes that earlier in the season could have been disastrous.
“If that happened to us in March we were done,” Coyote coach Al Mendiola said.
But the unearned run by the Raiders didn’t bother the Yotes skipper as much as something else.
“I got a little fired up because we weren’t competing. It wasn’t because of what we did, it’s because we weren’t competing. People started dropping their heads ... and I can’t stand that, I told them you compete for me we’re gonna be fine.”
And the Yotes picked it up, battling to stay in the game and, trying to gain a spark in the third, Caylin LePire provided a small one, leading off with a double into the right-center gap.
The perfect start, but then the breaks seemed to mount up against the Yotes, who drew two walks off pitcher Joelle Riekeman, but she also struck out two Yote hitters, and it looked like the unlucky breaks that hurt The C of I all season might catch up to them again.
With the team’s leading hitter and run producer — Haley Butcher — at the plate with two outs and the sacks packed with Yotes, The C of I had the chance to shake that bad luck, only to see Butcher nub a ball 25 feet towards third. Butcher wouldn’t let the break beat her, or the Yotes, hustling to first and just beating the throw of Danielle Stratton.
That meager base knock only tied the game 1-1, but the life in the Coyote dugout immediately became apparent. Stacy Smith stepped up and whacked a two-run single, and after a defensive stand, the Yotes offense iced the win.
But more noticeably, The C of I players had their swagger back after Butcher’s little RBI single.
Defensively they stood tall, offensively they swung confidently, and for the first time since setting a record for wins and grabbing their first-ever league crown back in May of 2007, the highly-regarded 2008 Yotes looked like the team everyone expected.
“We kept our energy for 12 innings, never once stopped talking, we were always positive,” Mendiola said, “that’s huge for a team that’s struggled earlier. It’s like, ‘OK, we’ll pick you up.’”
The Yotes picked each other up, and picked up the wins, giving them six straight and a share of third in the Cascade Conference. Huge considering the top three in league along with the top independent team in the region go to the postseason, the NAIA Region I tournament.
A big goal for the Yotes to accomplish with just four games left, including two tough tests against No. 20-ranked Oregon Tech today.
But the way The C of I has played the last two weeks — and the look in the team’s eye after Butcher’s RBI single turned the tide on the season — there’s no reason to think the Yotes can’t win a postseason berth.
“This is just the first step of our journey,” Mendiola said after beating the Raiders, “we’ve got a big one (Saturday, April 26) and then next Saturday (May 3, against Eastern Oregon).
“We’re still gonna work our butts off, play every pitch and play every inning and if we can continue to play this, just the energy — clicking hitting, pitching and defense — we should be there.”
A huge turnaround for the Coyotes thanks to one very big momentum-shifting single.
“I think these girls, they’re ready, we’re ready for the challenge,” Mendiola said, “and whether we succeed or not, we gave it a good run.
“But I think we’ll be there.”
After Friday, there’s good reason for everyone to believe.

ci-gf1.gif College of Idaho’s Stacy Smith, right, is tagged out by Great Falls’ Samantha Schultz, left, on a steal attempt Tuesday afternoon at the College of Idaho. The Coyotes look to turn around a disappointing season with a strong finish. (Greg Kreller/IPT) C of I put pressure on self to defend, but now team focuses on outplaying foes instead By Mike Stetson mstetson@idahopress.com CALDWELL  Forget the expectations. It’s the message Coyote softball coach Al Mendiola is telling his team, a squad picked to repeat as Cascade Conference champions and to host the NAIA Region I tournament. But the season hasn’t been up to championship form for The College of Idaho, which sits fifth in the league, eight losses back of front-runner and No. 21-ranked Oregon Tech, with only a slim hope left of a winning the conference crown.
“Obviously they’re disappointed, but they put too much pressure on themselves and that’s where we got in trouble,†Mendiola said of the team’s attitude, as the Yotes sit at 17-16 overall and just 6-10 in league, having been swept in conference doubleheaders three times and only having one league sweep to boast of.
“They felt like they had to perform and they had to win conference because everybody’s expecting them to win conference instead of just playing the game. ... This year everybody’s saying, ‘Oh, we’re defending conference champions.’ You’re not defending anything, you need to win it.â€Â
Maybe that attitude  forgetting expectations  is starting to sink in, as Mendiola says the team played well despite losing 3-of-4 on the road at Concordia and Corban last weekend, and rose to the occasion to sweep NAIA Region I foe Great Falls in a twinbill Tuesday.
“I’m seeing some more energy out of the team, we’re just not coming out with the win right now,†he said.
But for the Yote coaching staff, seeing that energy is the key.
“Our expectations are go out and play the game,†Mendiola said. “Play harder than the opponent and if you win, you win, if you lose  you can’t control wins and losses, you can only can control how you play, and we’ve been doing that.â€Â
Just sometimes, it hasn’t all clicked at the same time for the Yotes, according to senior Katie Zillner.
“We just can’t put it all together in one game,†she said. “Seems like we have good pitching and defense and then we don’t have offense or if we have offense, our pitching or defense is off, so we just haven’t been able to be a complete package yet.
“We did that (Tuesday),†she added after the Yotes’ sweep of the Argos.
Potentially turning the corner, Mendiola hopes, as the team looks ahead to two big games Saturday at Northwest Christian, where the Yotes look to maintain the momentum the wins against the Argos provided, before they close out the season with three league twinbills at home. And while there’s still a slim chance The C of I could win the conference  likely needing to win out and get some help  the real goal is climbing the standings to earn a postseason berth. The top independent team in the region, the Cascade Conference champ, and then the next two in the region rankings earn a spot in the Region I tournament. The Yotes’ sweep of the Argos helped with that, but now they must catch Southern Oregon (8-6 league) and Corban (8-8) for a playoff berth.
“It’s really disappointing as a senior because it’s my last year, but I think we can do it,†Zillner said of making the playoffs. “We’ve got enough talent and enough heart on our team that we’re gonna turn it around.â€Â
And, with a 3-1 record against the Warriors, the Yotes hold that tie-breaker, and still have to host the Raiders for two games. So the Yotes aren’t going to give up.
“There’s some of us that know what postseason play is like and we’re not ready to give that up yet,†Zillner said, “... we’ll be there, we will not take no for and answer.â€Â
Maybe a little more relaxed, and a lot more determined, the Yotes are ready for a run, which should make their rivals the next few weeks nervous. (Published April 17, 2008, in the Idaho Press-Tribune) ...read more

(Greg Kreller/IPT) First start a success for former Middleton High standout By Mike Stetson mstetson@idahopress.com CALDWELL  It’s been a while for Donnae Carrell, but the Coyote sophomore didn’t seem to miss a beat. The former Middleton High star pitcher, who led the Vikings to a pair of 3A state softball titles, took to the circle for her first collegiate start and stymied Great Falls as The College of Idaho swept the Argonauts 4-0 and 7-2.
“I was actually not nervous,†said Carrell, who missed last season due to back problems and had only pitched 7 1-3 innings in relief this season.
“This is a good game to come in on; nonconference, not so much pressure,†she added.
But still a challenge against an Argos squad that got an Erica McAlmond RBI single in the first. Carrell’s helped herself, walking and scoring on a passed ball to tie the score. Her teammates helped, too, as Katy Luetke tripled and scored on a Stephanie Stover single in the third. Great Falls (11-14 overall) rallied thanks to a fielding error in the fifth to tie the game, but Carrell (2-0) never faltered as she scattered seven hits, struck out one and didn’t give up a hard shot all game.
“My dropball worked really well, which is a plus ’cause it’s down, and my changeup, if you can get a fast ball, which is my drop, and then a changeup, it’s good,†she said.
“This is a good opportunity to see where she’s at,†Coyote coach Al Mendiola said of Carrell, who he planned to use for relief only this season, but is now considering as a starter down the stretch.
“What I like about her is she can change speeds and she can move the ball,†he added.
Of course, there was plenty for the Yotes (17-16 overall, 6-10 conference) to like as they grabbed their first twinbill sweep since March 22, and provided some timely hitting. That came in the bottom of the sixth for Carrell with the game tied 2-2. With two outs, Katie Zillner singled, then a hit batter and a walk loaded the bases for pinch-hitter Daniyelle Villyard. Villyard reached on an infield single before Kalie Kurdy walked, then Luetke and pinch-hitter Caylin LePire added singles, capping a 5-run rally.
“It wasn’t necessarily the two-out rally, I was impressed with more the string of hits we put together today,†Mendiola said.
“We never really put three, four hits in one inning to score those three or four runs and today we did it and it felt pretty good.â€Â
All that after a dominating, 15-strikeout performance in the circle by Zillner (10-7) in the opener. And the Yotes managed another nice rally for her in the first as Carrell walked and Zillner singled, then a two-run single from Haley Butcher and a Kalie Kurdy RBI base knock made it 3-0 quickly. Kelsi Murdock added an RBI groundout in the second, more than enough for Zillner, who said playing a nonconference foe might have been just what the Yotes  who had lost 11-of-13 headed into the doubleheader  needed to snap out of their funk.
“I think just being relaxed, ... everybody was just out there to do their thing,†she said.
