At the start of the week in our paper, I wrote about potential records to watch for.

Two of those marks were potential milestones for the College of Idaho women's soccer — goals scored in a season and wins in a season.

I also mentioned one other thing about the Yotes — they set their sights on advancing beyond just the league title game this year. To do that, they needed to beat the national-power house Concordia Cavaliers.

It all came together Friday afternoon in Portland, Ore. — sure couldn't have been at Simplot Stadium where Coyotes fans could all watch! The C of I ladies picked up their first win in 22 games against No. 5 Concordia, beating the Cavaliers 2-1 in overtime.

That took care of the scoring record, previously 39 and now at 41, and counting.

And it ties the wins in a season mark of 12.

Even bigger, the Coyotes went from third in the league standings — and a potential playoff round game — to a share of the lead with the Cavaliers.

And, with the head-to-head tie-breaker now in hand, the Yotes could wrap up a new wins record, home field throughout the postseason, and their first-ever Cascade Conference regular season title with a win at Warner Pacific today.

Now, I don't want to overlook the Knights, but just a word — Warner Pacific has just two wins all season.

C of I men in the hunt

While the C of I ladies made a bit of history Friday, the Yote men made sure their season didn't turn into history with a 3-0 win over Corban Friday.

Not overwhelming, but a must-win versus the two-win Warriors as the Coyotes sit in third in the league standings.

A big deal, as the top three make the postseason, so the C of I is on the bubble.

In the Yotes favor, five games remain on the schedule. Now, it all depends how you look at this fact, too, whether it's good or bad — the C of I next plays league front-runners Warner Pacific and Concordia on the road today and Monday.

A chance to close ground? Yes, definitely with wins.

Crusaders still in playoff hunt

The chances of a postseason berth are all but finished for the soccer teams, but still in the hunt are the Crusader volleyball players, so get out and support Northwest Nazarene.

Yep, tonight NNU hosts St. Martin's, team that's just 2-16 on the season.

Not a huge threat, but NNU needs wins.

The Crusaders remain No. 9 in this week's West Region poll, trailing San Francisco State at No. 8, and Alaska Anchorage at No. 7.

The Crusaders have a game against the Seawolves remaining on their schedule, meaning there's a head-to-head chance to gain ground on them, but nothing to help against San Francisco State.

Nothing but wins, which if NNU keeps pile those up, they put the pressure on the Gators, who happened to beat NNU early in the season.

Also a double-edged sword for NNU, the Gators play Cal State LA and UC San Diego still this season. Good as both are ranked ahead of San Francisco State in the West Region Poll, so, going by the numbers the Gators should lose.

Bad, because if the Gators win, it only bolsters their case to remain ranked above NNU.

Random polling?

There's a couple of questions surrounding recent polls and the College of Idaho. A few weeks back I mentioned that the Coyotes women's soccer team lost ground in the polls while winning five straight games, all by shutouts.

Maybe a road win over the No. 5 team in the land will be enough to leap the Yotes into the Top 25 for the first time ever this week. The new poll comes out Tuesday, and my pick is for the C of I ladies to climb from the 29th spot — fourth in the others receiving votes — to about the No. 23 spot. Check to see if I'm right at www.naia.org this week.

Not the only poll question I have, though, as the C of I women's cross country team seemed to make a remarkable leap if you look at this week's Top 25.

The Yotes went from not ranked to No. 6.

Wait a minute! How can that be?

If you asked that same question, good for you as the Yotes were No. 5 in the land back on Oct. 7.

Seems the league's rater failed to file a report for the week ending Oct. 11, and so no team from the league was rated, the penalty for not filing your paperwork

Fortunately, it won't hurt the C of I ladies, as it's still basically mid-season — the final Top 25 poll comes out Nov. 8.

Where's Madie?

A quick look at the stats from Friday's rout by the No. 8 College of Idaho volleyball team over Evergreen State shows Madie Machurek did not play.

I checked with Coyote SID Mike Safford, and the reason for her absence was unknown to him.

As soon as I find something out — hopefully just a minor issue — I'll let C of I fans know what's going on with the Yotes setter.
