Saturday proved to be a fun day for me at the track, thanks to Ashley Rendahl.
If you picked up a copy of Sunday's Press-Tribune, you saw that I talked with the Northwest Nazarene junior who I'll admit was a bit surprised when I approached her for a few comments after she finished off the 5,000 meters.
OK, rightfully so in terms of wins, as Rendahl was second in the 5K, sixth in the 3K and...read more

Friday night turned out to be a big night, in more ways than just getting a season sweep of perennial women's powerhouse Eastern Oregon.
The 16th-ranked College of Idaho women also wrapped up an opening-round home game in the Cascade Conference tournament to start Tuesday, Feb. 23 — call the C of I athletic department at 459-5835 to buy tickets for the postseason — and even more important...read more

Another week and a slew of games on the home hardwood gives me plenty to talk about, so let's jump right in starting with the College of Idaho ladies.
Impressive doesn't even begin to describe the 18th-ranked Yotes after what they did Friday night. Yes, I've spoken of their defense and how impressive it can be, and how it has won games in the past by shutting down foes.
But there's...read more

Northwest Nazarene's Beth Johnson puts up shot in the Crusaders' 91-56 rout of Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday. Johson scored 18 points shooting a perfect 9-of-9 from the field in the win.
NAMPA — A three-game skid might not seem like much, but only if you take it out of context.
When those three games are all consecutive home loses, and all in league play after starting the year perfect on your own floor, well, yes, that little skid suddenly looks mighty long.
So long, the last time the Northwest Nazarene men won a home game was their 114-108 overtime win on Dec. 8 against...read more

Ah, another week slips by and it gives me a chance to write a little bit more about the action on the hardwood.
Of course, one team will be spared from too much comment, simply because they await their first game of the week — the Northwest Nazarene ladies. The Crusaders take on Montana State-Billings in a game that showcases one of the Treasure Valley's own, Callie Kautzmann.
The sophomore...read more

"Your talking about life events that make basketball look very small."
Reagan Rossi's words should ring in everyone's ears as reminders of both good, and bad, that life brings. Specifically, the College of Idaho women's basketball coach referred to two of her players Friday night.
Yes, a 20-point win makes it easy to be profound like that, but having worked with Rossi —...read more

NAMPA — Congrats to Ryan McCarthy and the Northwest Nazarene women.
Thursday night, McCarthy picked up his first win as the head coach for the Crusader ladies, guiding NNU to a 76-53 win over Central Washington.
Of course, there will be note of this in the record books as McCarthy did it filling in for head coach Kelli Lindley. Lindley suffered an infection and was in the hospital briefly...read more

Another week rolls by, but this time there's so much more to talk about.
With both the College of Idaho, and now Northwest Nazarene, in league play, every game is so much bigger.
So let's start with the Crusaders, who opened the Great Northwest Athletic Conference season on a sour note (please see my story yesterday with comments from both NNU coaches).
Yep, both the men and women lost...read more

Thursday turned out to be a very disappointing night for Crusader basketball fans.
After both teams cruised to impressive starts to the season in nonconference play, the start of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference race began on a sour note for the men and women, with both suffering setbacks.
While the Northwest Nazarene men might not have been favored against No. 17-ranked Seattle Pacific,...read more

It seems like it's taken forever to get here, but the league season is upon the Crusaders.
After two very successful months of action for both the Northwest Nazarene men's and women's basketball teams, the real tests begin tonight as the NNU men host No. 17 Seattle Pacific, while the NNU ladies visit Western Oregon in the first of 16 Great Northwest Athletic Conference contests for each...read more

Yep, I'm back. It might have been a couple weeks, but surprisingly there's not too much to talk about as the Christmas break was the big thing the past two weeks. Yes, there were some games, but only one locally, and I've already mentioned that as the Crusader men played very good against Boise State in a loss on Tuesday.
NNU also bounced back well, shooting the lights out in Colorado...read more

BOISE - The final outcome might not have looked good for Crusaders fans on the scoreboard - Broncos 76, Crusaders 58 - but NNU's faithful should take heart in knowing their team truly played as BSU's equal for almost the entire evening Tuesday night at Taco Bell Arena.
Northwest Nazarene came out and weathered a barrage by Boise State on the Broncos home court, and rallied from an 11-point...read more

Another week, and there's plenty to write about on the hardwood.
Let's start with the welcome-back effort for Craig McGee at the College of Idaho.
McGee, if you have been following, was cut on his arm during a game in the Golden Rule Shoot-out back in November. Evidently a pretty bad cut, as it became infected and his arm swelled up after the Coyotes road trip to Washington the first weekend...read more

Weeks like this certainly make my job fun.
Yes, there's the obvious College of Idaho versus Northwest Nazarene rivalry game, a thriller that went to overtime and I'm sure many will argue is the best-ever in this series.
So just how could it get any better?
How about watching both teams play on the same court, though against different teams, for two nights in a row.
That's exactly...read more

NAMPA — Games like this would make anyone a basketball fan.
Tuesday night, the Coyotes and Crusaders truly played a classic, a game filled from the opening tip-off with heart-pounding action.
When NNU coach Tim Hills after the game said it was like a fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, I could only smile and agree, as I sat in the press box watching thinking almost the exact same thing...read more
