I spend a lot of time knocking on doors this time of year (election time) and from years of doing this I have learned many things. First, in today's world, everyone is suspicious of anyone knocking on their door. I find this sad, but the reality of our world.
Second, it doesn't matter how many "welcome" signs adorn an entry, it does not mean you are literally welcome. Third, many...read more

Facebook is one of the most popular social sites today. It has crossed generations, class, gender, race, religion and politics to became the first true melting pot of social media. It is rare today to find someone who doesn't know what Facebook is, and most have their own profile.
Facebook spawned a new language while affecting relationships. It renewed friendships, restored family ties and revived...read more

When I was younger, I would dream about a female president. I couldn't wait for the day women were recognized as every bit as capable as their male counterparts. Of course many more years than I could have imagined have gone by without a female in the white house, and now faced with the potential prospect of it, I can only pray that it does not happen.
I remember clearly the night Barack Obama...read more

There is a lot of arguing back and forth right now regarding the minimum wage. Should the minimum wage be raised? If so, what amount would be fair? Is the purpose of the minimum wage to sustain a household? Or does the minimum wage serve only to give unskilled workers a start in the labor force?
Most of my adult life, I have been an employer rather than an employee. Of course this leaves me with...read more

Time marches on as they say, but never has that fact been more obvious as it is right now to myself and a group of friends. This weekend, we will celebrate our 40th class reunion. Yes, four oh, 29 plus eleven, twoscore, four decades, no matter how you describe it, it is still a long time!
The Vallivue graduating class of 1974 is gathering to celebrate this milestone. (And in case any of you are thinking...read more

I spend a lot of time talking about interior paint color trends, but since it is still exterior painting time, let's talk exterior colors. When you spend decades in an industry, you see the trends come and go. After this long, I can absolutely say it is true that everything comes back in style sooner or later.
One of the main color trends reappearing (remember I am talking exterior now) is a...read more

I have always had the attitude that creating a living space you love cannot carry a price tag, especially if you intend to remain in your home. But as real estate picks up, people naturally become more transient, and the return on your investment becomes more relevant.
So what remodeling project is worth it? Hands down, maybe not everyone's first choice when it comes to home improvement, but...read more

Everyone can complain all they want about the Idaho Legislature, and what they will and won't get done, but they scored big in my eyes this past week, as the speed limit was increased on rural interstates. I know there are naysayers out there, people already drive over the limit and this will just be a free pass for even more speeding. I say...EXACTLY.
Most of us will never even notice the speed...read more

I have finally found some time to revisit the happenings at the Republican Convention. As I am sure most of you have noticed, it is still very much in the press, with something new being added almost daily. I am going to try and explain in the simplest manner possible what led up to the events of the convention. In most cases, THIS IS MY OPINION, simply what I have experienced being involved in republican...read more

All week I have wanted to write about the Republican Convention that was held last weekend, but it seems it was getting more than enough press on it's own. Headlines, almost every day since the convention wrapped up, have proclaimed the level of discourse; drama filled, divisive, dysfunctional, a total meltdown, full of consequences.
While I absolutely agree with some of these descriptors, I...read more

The entire country is talking about Bowe, and here in Idaho, people seem to have a definite opinion since the Bergdahls live in Idaho. We have watched the story for years, not quite understanding everything, and always hoping he would come home one day and all those questions would be answered.
Well the day has arrived, he is coming home, but instead of questions being answered, the entire story...read more

Published in the Idaho Press-Tribune March 17, 2014:
In the last few months, the most common refrain I hear from clients is "I am just sick of my house." They are never sure exactly when it happened, but somehow it all caught up with them. Changing trends, changing lifestyles, or simply becoming tired of looking at the same thing, and suddenly they are desperate to change it all.

There is total uproar over the racist remarks of Donald Sterling, as there should be. He is an idiot, a jerk, a moron, a bigot, an all around unlikable guy that we would be better off without. I don't like to call names, I always feel you lose your credibility by doing so, but apparently I have saved up for that one deserving soul, and there is no risk of losing any credibility here.
So we are...read more

Cable One customers have recently lost 15 channels through a dispute with a major cable programmer, Viacom. Cable One President Tom Might sounded all righteous and hard working for his people when he created a commercial explaining why Cable One was going to drop them.
"We asked for a price reduction because of their declining viewership, and they refused. We also asked to drop the less popular...read more

Published in the Idaho Press-Tribune March 3, 2014:
The first week of March is a reminder that spring is right around the corner. Usually we have had a few teaser days of nice weather by now, and this year is no different. But we really need to remember that in all reality, we will still have more winter on the way before we are truly blessed with the full bloom of spring. Always play it safe and...read more
