God and Country organizers: Pentagon denied flyover

NAMPA - Organizers of the God and Country Family Festival say the Pentagon denied a military flyover, which the celebration has featured for 42 years, because of the event's emphasis on Christianity.

"Basically, we applied to have a military flyover," Director Patti Syme told the Idaho Press-Tribune Thursday. "We were given (Federal Aviation Administration) approval, and then had to apply through the Pentagon. When we applied they denied our request because, as the gentlemen stated, our Web site specifically stated that this is a Christian event."

The Pentagon did not respond to a request for comment submitted to its media office Thursday evening.

Organizers don't deny the explicitly Christian nature of the annual patriotic rally.

"Yes, it's about as Christian as you can get - we believe in promoting Christianity," Syme said. "And we have no plans to change that."

But Canyon County Commissioner David Ferdinand, the festival board's media contact, said that's not all there is to it.

"It's God and country, and that's the military and all of that," Ferdinand stressed. "You do the flyover to honor the military and the freedoms that they stand for. To me, we're honoring the military when we do that flyover, and that's why we do it. I think they made a bad decision."

Organizers will push to bring the flyover back next year, Ferdinand said.

"The military and the families who have sacrificed their loved ones for this country and for those freedoms deserve to have that flyover," he said.

Ferdinand said it was unclear why, after 42 years, the Pentagon did not approve the flyover this year.

"It's like the guy got on our Web site for a minute and just looked at that one thing," he said.

He said Syme told him the Pentagon representative she spoke with was very understanding and said the military would love to participate but could not do so because of the explicit endorsements of Christianity.

Syme's husband Scott Syme, a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, ran for U.S. Senate in 2008.

Christian activist Brandi Swindell sent a text message about the lack of the flyover from Wednesday night's event at the Idaho Center amphitheater. She followed up with another message Thursday.

"This is unbelievable and deeply troubling," Swindell wrote. "The Pentagon does not have the authority to discriminate against Christian groups or events. This type of religious bigotry is unconstitutional. How sad to see this lack of respect and level of blatant bias surrounding the 4th of July celebration."

Pam Baldwin, executive director of the Interfaith Alliance of Idaho, said there's no basis for the assertion that the denial amounted to federal government discrimination against Christians.

"Everything is not about whether folks are Jews or Christians or Muslims," she said. "If people are saying that, they're probably looking for media attention or looking to disparage other faiths."

Baldwin questioned whether a flyover of the event would have been a prudent use of public resources, especially in light of the deep recession.

Comments:

Too bad it wasn't a muslim event - I'm sure then the fly over would have been granted! I'm a Christian American and proud of it!!!!!

In the United States we are blessed to be a country where all are free to practice their religion. Therefore the military should never participate in a rally such as this because then it is endorsing one religion over another. Unfortunately the Christian right wing would like our country to be for Christians only and to become a theocracy. The overall message that this sends is that we are fighting wars for God which makes us no different from the Islamic extremist that wage war in the name of God. War is not a Christian value. The religious right has the potential to become very dangerous if they could have their way then they would have the government round up anyone who is not a Christian and put them on trial. We need to move forward and make sure that our great country is a safe place for those of all religions to practice their religion. The religious right wants to destroy the freedom of others. Why should the tax dollars of non Christians pay for a flyover of a religious group?
Elisabeth Rodriguez - 6:57 AM, Thursday July 9, 2009
It is clear a little knowledge is dangerous. You confuse the Islamic agenda with that of Christians. All religions are not equal. Christians have been in this country since the beginning. Read about the Pilgrims, prayer in THIS country. Read the history of this country. The President made a statement that we are NO LONGER a Christian country, we are now MUSLIM. He admits we are known as such. Muslim COUNTRY? Everyone knows this is not true. Maybe this is on the agenda to change that. Yes, we have more and more of those who believe differently, everyone can practice what they believe but there are exceptions. One who believes in stoning women can not do so in this country no matter what your religion says you can do. ALL claiming to be Christian are not, an example that comes to mind is President Obama who ran for president of the U.S. as a Christian....truth always outs. There are those who from every group who are not stable and those who do not know the difference do things which are not Christian. You can not stand for everyone. You can not lump all who claim they are this or that into the same group. Yet it is done all the time. Whenever someone claiming to be a Christian fingers point--look what Christians do--when the person is not who he claims to be. PLEASE NOTE: EVERYONE IN THE MILITARY, INCLUDING CHRISTIANS, ARE FREE ALSO TO WORSHIP. AS A FAMILY WHERE WE SERVED AS CHRISTIANS WE DID SO JUST AS ALL OTHERS DID THE SAME. TO EXCLUDE CHRISTIANS WOULD NOT BE FAIR AND WOULD BE UNAMERICAN. THIS IS MY OPINION. YOU ARE FREE TO EXPRESS YOUR VIEWS, OPINIONS, BELIEFS BECAUSE WE ARE IN THIS COUNTRY. No one is telling you that you must be a Christian. Read what Christians believe. You and all are free to believe in whatever God one desires. Welcome to America where those who are not Christian want to destroy those who are.

This is the same military that wants the young goyim (like my son and nephews) to die for that anti-Christian theocracy in the Middle East.

Re: Comments about Jews, Israel disturb me as do hate towards any people. It is remarkable that few know that the real financial hero of the American Revolution was Haym Salomon, a Jew, who advanced $800,000.00 of his own money for this cause at a time when money was critical. He also made other loans much below rates others charged. He died in debt as Congress refused to pay him, he had a wife and 4 children. Because of this Jew and others like him the U.S. of America was born and exists today. Those who believe in Scripture please take note it says those who bless Israel will be blessed, those who curse Israel will be cursed. We are instructed to pray for the peace of Israel. Our Lord Jesus was such a Jew and Christians need to know that. From the Jew we received the Word. With which country are we fighting for Israel? Are we not fighting to help Muslims? All people need help, all people need prayer. Muslims are told to kill all infidels, this means Christians and all who do not believe as they believe. Christians are to be known for their love for one another, I heard a Muslim mock Christians saying yes, just look and see how they love one another....we should all be ashamed for that. Pray as if you mean it, love as if you feel it. Don't choose to be mean and hateful for it is a choice. We make statements many times due to our lack of knowledge. Many do not know that a Jew helped us win the American Revolution. This people were also held in slavery for hundreds of years. Because no one would step up and help them millions of Jews died in WWII. Think about it.
w - 5:19 PM, Wednesday July 8, 2009
Right you are, w. The Bible says that Christians are to be helpful and kind toward the Jews, and help them to protect and preserve Israel and Israelis from those who would destroy them. Jews have always been helpful, generous and protective of Christians, too, which I assume are God's instructions for them. Personally, I think of Jews as being the older brothers and sisters to Christians. Like older siblings, they lead us by example and they help teach us, in this case, teaching us their history - the history of God's chosen ones. Anti-semites and other Nazis can claim to be Christians but they're only CINOs (Christians In Name Only) because one can't be a Christian and an enemy of Jews, too.
LibertyOrDeath - 8:47 PM, Thursday July 9, 2009
They have to make sure they have that annual $47,000,000 to support the Star-of-David JEWISH "holocaust Museum" in Wash DC. The $4BILLION annual WELFARE CHECK to Israel is more important too. Now try putting a 2 foot tall Nativity on "your" Townhall lawn for 2 weeks at Christmas, and count the number of ACLU JEWISH lawyers that jump up and down on it.
Melvin - 11:46 AM, Wednesday July 8, 2009
Yeah, can't do a show for American tax payers - too busy fighting wars for Israel, a foreign country and a JEWISH one at that, that murdered Americans on the USS Liberty.
Axle - 9:23 PM, Tuesday July 7, 2009
Lloyd, You are ignorant if you believe that your tax dollars aren't being spent in ways with which you don't agree. And way to go disparaging other people's beliefs. You people really ARE tolerant. I feel the love, brother! You and Obama can strip this country of its religious heritage if you want, but don't get on here crying when our nation crumbles. You will get no support here and, in fact, we will all be sure to treat you the way you treat others. You are very ignorant and I fear people like you will shape this country.
Jeff - 11:30 AM, Tuesday July 7, 2009
Lloyd, you're one of those people that writes without thinking about what he is saying. You wrote, "all they are doing is refusing to spend my tax dollars to make you feel good about your lack of rational thought". Does your rational thought recall the flyover they did in New York for a photo op, which scared the people half to death and cost hundreds of thousands of untold tax dollars? Thats just one of a thousand things they are doing to waste our tax dollars. You can't justify this away. Please, think first before you respond and make a fool out of yourself.

Lana, there are plans to remove in God we trust from our currency. I have heard there are coins now which have no such wording. Obama's plans seem to be to destroy all things American's love and hold dear. Hate destroys and we are seeing it before our eyes. This is my opinion. Others have their own opinions for which they are free to express as well.

What fine representatives the "Christians" have on this forum. When one of you gets around to reading the First Amendment and a few of the precedents, can you come back and tell all the others about it? Clearly none of you have a clue what the separation clause is all about.
Binkyboy - 10:00 AM, Tuesday July 7, 2009
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." Where do you find any mention of separation? It merely says that Congress shall not pass any law establishing a national relgion, such as the Church of England. A fly over at a Christian inclusive event or a Christian burial has never before been denied. The phrase,'Separation of church and state', was first penned in an 1802 letter by Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists, who had expressed concern over the intrusion of government into personal religious conscience, not the reverse. "Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State" For the record, Jefferson did not write the Constitution nor have input in writing the 1st amendment. He was in Paris. James Madison was the principle author of our Bill of Rights. It is clear from the extensive writings of the founders that religious practice (prayer, fasting, printing of Bibles by the US Govt, etc.) were integral from the first days of the Continental Congress!
Ragfish - 12:19 PM, Tuesday July 7, 2009
Perhaps, it is you, sir, Blinkyboy, is it? who needs to read this.... again. You did not explain yourself very well.....do you know what it is to be a "Christian"? Your quick rush to judgement while having read very few responses that you consider Christian responses.. reveal your giving very little thought to either. Before you try to answer Christians you need to know more about the subject. Study what it means to be a Christian which our President Obama claimed to be but was not this - so Christians would vote for him? He does not know what or who a Christian is or what it means.... revealed by what he says and does. You can follow your God or lack thereof and Christians have the same right. Speak to your group. Many make themselves sick trying to point at Christians making fun of them. Don't you have better things to do with your time? You did not reveal what you believe yourself to be while pointing your finger at those you are sure are Christians....agnostic, atheist,? Just what group do you belong or represent? Or do you believe in anything or anyone? You are far right? Obama is probably Muslim and if so do you stand behind him? He says one thing and does another, all the while claiming he is transparent. He did CLAIM he was a Christian, what do you think he believes in the First Amendment....but you see, anyone can claim they are Christian and if you are not one how would you know a true Christian? I really would like to know because many saying they are does not make it so. A Christian believes the Bible, is a follower of Christ in all things, in every way. Then there are those who hate Christians, the Bible and Christ. People reveal who they are....scripture says out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The hate for Christians is being felt on every side these days, you are just one of many. I have seen and heard the hate for the right and for Sarah Palin, it is shameful. Hurting people is a ladder to no where. If hurting and blasting Christians gives you a lift or helps you please inform everyone of how little value you place on others who believe differently than you. Have you ever read the Bible or learned just what Christians really believe? If you knew, you might change your mind. Knowing for yourself is not the same as hearing what other people say about it which is probably not true. All these haters of Christians do not know whom they hate or why for the most part. My opinion, you have yours and welcome to it.
w - 11:19 AM, Tuesday July 7, 2009
Why does your president hate this country so much and the way it was founded??? Maybe because he wants to change you and the way Americans think. He should not be in the White house, he belongs with all the other crooks in that windy city were he came from.
Dude - 8:56 AM, Tuesday July 7, 2009
And they all laughed at the Internet crazies who shouted out all the signs pointing to Barack Hussein Obama being the real anti-Christ. No National Day of Prayer assembly Covering the Cross at Georgetown Dividing the Christians of Notre Dame Releasing of terrorists from Gitmo, untried Gay and Lesbian celebration at White House appointment of henchmen (Czars) accountable to only BHO and now this? Denying a 42 yr. tradition of military flyover on the sole basis that it is held by a Christian organization????? IMPEACH OBAMA NOW!!!!!
ObserverNY - 8:19 AM, Tuesday July 7, 2009
This is not surprising considering the current tone in DC these days. The current leaders will celebrate all fringe groups at any time but Christians will always be left out. They meet with Muslims, gays, activist or whoever comes knocking but Christians are taboo. And the sad thing is that this will pass, basically un-reported and not discussed, because Christians let it happen that way. Until Christians actually set aside their differences and start voting and speaking as a block it will never change. Christianity by definition will let itself be persecuted and discriminated against without so much as a whimper. Americans claim to be Christian by a vast majority but when it comes time to vote, they choose to set that part aside. There very well may be something that awakes the giant but it hasn’t come as of yet. Politicians know they can count on the Christians to go along with whatever they do so as of yet they have little to concern themselves with. If this ever changes the entire government will be shaken and tremble in fear.
Jim - 7:50 AM, Tuesday July 7, 2009
There is a clear pattern with this administration against anything remotely Christian in nature. Regardless of political party, we should ALL be afraid. This is bad road for this country to be on.

ANOTHER SLAP IN THE FACE OF ALL OF US WHO BELIEVE IN GOD AND OUR TROOPS. Obama and his band of unmerry men/women are just about the worse people we have ever had in our White House. This action is of no surprise to me. As someone wrote he hates the Military and I don't think he thinks a whole lot of God either. What you people do for our Troops is an Honorable thing and I want to "THANK YOU". Our fighters both men and women deserve everything from a lunch if you see one at the counter to this wonderful event you put on for them. And the "swearing in" is a great tribute to how much you love this country and the people who defend her. To bad our President doesn't see it that way. President Obama, I speak to you now. This festival is for the Troops, with prayers to God to protect them from the people of Nampa, no more, no less. To bad your dislike for the Military has blinded you to it. Let the "fly-over happen if it's not to late. Do something right.
Ernie from Pa. - 11:16 PM, Sunday July 5, 2009
You can sure bet the Obama Administration had something to do with this. Obama HATES the military...period.
Cheryl - 6:11 PM, Saturday July 4, 2009
You are right. Obama hates the military, he hates America and Americans, he hates Christians. In fact, he is filled with loathing for all things most Americans hold dear. Claimed he was a Christian while quoting scripture and mocking it, clearly he did not know a true Christian believes the Word and is a follower of Jesus Christ. He shows his love for all things Muslim. He loves those who hate us as Americans, he embraces leaders and countries who are against us. He says one thing while doing another. His transparency is a wall of lies. Congress will not/can not do the will of the people, they are busy doing the will of President Obama. I hear about the wonderful things President Obama and his wife have done....what are these things? I heard one newsman say that Michele is a "fashion icon", the laughter is loud; he also stated that her beauty, her accomplishments surpass that of Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana. This is unbelievable. The comments made toward Sarah Palin are sickening, those about her, her daughters, her baby. They have no class at all. To say she paraded her children out there.....hey, so did all the other candidates. The left makes fun of her daughter for having a baby and not married, look at those on the left who do that and think nothing of it. Scripture speaks of those who call evil "good" while calling good "evil", speaking of those today in my opinion. The View women laugh and mock while worshipping at the feet of Obama and speaking of their wonderful deeds. Frankly, what are these things that are so wonderful, I have not seen what they have seen. Our country is being destroyed by one who wants to do just that and the left smiles, bows, while their pockets dry up. Obama is paying for the new Health Care Plan by taking over 600 billion dollars from Medicare to fund his health programs. No one will have good health care except those wealthy and can pay for it. Concgess will not have the same plan as other Americans. President Obama is destroying our country and the left smiles while he does so. The flyover to take pictures for the President was ok but the one to honor the military was not. He is so filled with hate that he shows his contempt over and over, the left smile and agree that Republicans, the right, Christians are the enemy. Abortion in the third trimester is cause for rejoicing and one day someone will stop this. There is a God. Pray for all those who have hurt, are hurting, will hurt from those on the left due to their deep hate for those on the right. I have heard that some want to change the constitution so that Obama can continue being president, also that his wife also wants to run for president and that many are doing their best to help Obama do so. Obamanation? Much like a word that sounds the same but different meanings? I am concerned for our children and for their children. Pray for America, pray for Americans. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Are Obama's plans reaching higher yet, to be the one world president? He is arrogant beyond belief but some in the house and senate are as well. Where can we find those who truly love America? I believe Sarah Palin loves America and look what the left does to her, with the help of the right. I believe McCain for whom I was ready to vote did her wrong and allowed his people to do so as well. She gave up much to help him and he never raised his voice to help her. She deserved better, she still deserves better. The left can not bear to see talented folk on the right and there are many. The left, for the most part, are blinded by hate for the right. I hate what is happening to our country.
w - 10:15 AM, Tuesday July 7, 2009
I am not an obama fan and am disturbed by what both parties have been doing to our freedom and liberty over the last 10 plus years. I am also a Christian disturbed by how easily the word the hatred is attach to what we don't believe in. It's my opinion that Obama is not doing the right thing, but it isn't fair to say he hates people. Only Obama knows what lies in his heart. Talk of hatred doesn't do anyone any good. God Bless
m&m - 8:47 PM, Monday August 10, 2009
The current administration is a shame & disgrace to the Human Race. There is no way Obama could believe in GOD! Perhaps he relly believes he is the messiah!!!! Don't get me started on the rest of those CHRISTIAN hating far left's in DC>
gary Timbes - 7:57 AM, Tuesday July 7, 2009
Hey loyd. I can understand your concern about the expense of a flyover when the economy is so down. Your ad hominem attack with it was unacceptable. Your anti-religion bias shud be kept to yourself. Incidently, were you upset about Michelle and kids popping over to London from Paris weeks ago just to have fish and chips? The military and civilian entourage with her plus the plane expense came out of YOUR pocket too. So just zip your lip about patriotic Americans celebrating July 4th and our military heroes.

John nailed it. The Obamas have enjoyed six months of world touring, lavish New York week end get away, $500 French sneakers,$6000 hand bag and Gap cap. (DEPUTY ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT AND DIRECTOR OF POLICY AND PROJECTS FOR THE FIRST LADY) $113,000 Rogers, Desiree G. (ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE FIRST LADY) Tubman, Samantha (DEPUTY ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR,SOCIAL OFFICE) $40,000 Boswell, Joseph J. (EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT TO THE CHIEF OF STAFF TO THE FIRST LADY) $36,000 Armbruster, Sally M. (STAFF ASSISTANT TO THE SOCIAL SECRETARY) Bookey, Natalie (STAFF ASSISTANT) Jackson, Deilia A. (DEPUTY ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE FIRST LADY) Military personnel take an oath that ends "So help me God" So a simple fly over being denied is hyprocrisy and only sefines Obama's determintation to kill the Consitution.

I am deeply saddened by government figureheads that want to take "God" out of our lives. This country was founded upon Christian principles! Our currency still has the words "In God We Trust" on it. I am deeply concerened about what our countries political leaders (all the way to the TOP), are trying to do in trying to force us to leave Christian principles out of our lives. I'll bet our Military (both active and Veterans) don't forget about God, especially when they are out there putting their lives on the line for our country, fighting and dying to keep us FREE. I believe that our President should apologize publicly for this denial of the flyover. As far as the expense, a lot more money is squandered everyday on useless expenses in our federal budget.

"The Pentagon does not have the authority to discriminate against Christian groups or events. This type of religious bigotry is unconstitutional. How sad to see this lack of respect and level of blatant bias surrounding the 4th of July celebration." What a joke! How can they say this with a straight face? Lady you've been getting undeserved special privileges for 42 years, and now that someone has quit pandering to your group you claim that it's bigotry? They aren't stopping your event. They aren't censoring it. All they are doing is refusing to spend my tax dollars to make you feel good about your lack of rational thought. If you want to see something in the sky - try praying a little more for that second coming.
